FORMER SIBANOR STATION OFFICER HELD INCOMMUNICADO
By Modou Jonga

The Former Station Officer of Sibanor Police Station, Assistant Superintendent Abdoulie Colley, has been held for six months incommunicado.
According to sources, ASP Colley was arrested on 14th August 2006 by security officers without access to him by his family.
ASP Colley was said to be arrested at Sibanor, then later transferred to Kanilai before taken to Janjanbureh prison in the Central River Region, where he is currently held incommunicado for six months.

According to sources OC Colley's arrest came in the wake of the fighting in the Senegalese region of Cassamance.
Assistant Superintendent Colley is alleged to have transported wounded rebel fighters to hospital for treatment and he was also alleged to have blocked the GNA soldiers from communicating information to their superiors, while the latter were on patrol at the border in Foni. However, a family source lamented the lack of substantial information about the whereabouts of their loved one whom they regard as the bread winner of the family. They further asserted that they did not have access to him and could not tell where he is being detained. They are worried over his long detention without access and have raised concerns over the health condition of their family member.

Family sources have expressed doubt about ASP Colley's alleged transportation of wounded rebels for treatment. They noted that ASP Colley does not have any established links with rebels in the Senegalese troubled region.

A reliable source further told this reporter that ASP Colley was never arraigned before any court of law.

This denial of access and the continued detention of their sole bread winner have caused serious psychological strain and difficulties on the entire family, according to family sources.
When contacted in the aftermath of O/C Colley's arrest, police PRO Aziz Bojang confirmed to this reporter that the latter is detained but asserted that he would neither reveal the reasons for his detention nor his whereabouts. However when contacted, the new police PRO, Jobarteh, confirmed the long detention but further said that his office is unaware of claim of denial of access to O/C Colley by his family.

So is he released without charge? Can he go back to his job? Does he get any compensation for loss of earnings and damaged reputation?

In the ideal world he should be entitled to compensation but not when we talked about modern Gambia. Anyway, he is one of the operatives in the system. In that respect, I think he deserves his predicament.

God save The Gambia
