A new Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1823. We are thankful for its Members included Thomas Clarkson, Henry Brougham, William Wilberforce, Thomas Fowell Buxton, Elizabeth Heyrick, Mary Lloyd, Jane Smeal, Elizabeth Pease and Anne Knight.
But before all this ,March 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of the Act of Parliament that officially ended direct British involvement in the transatlantic slave trade but only prohibited British ships being involved in the slave trade. The Act of 1807 made it illegal for British ships to transport captive Africans across the Atlantic for sale into slavery. That, however, was the full extent of the Act’s ban.
Other European nations continued the nefarious trade well into the mid-nineteenth century, a number of their ventures bolstered by finance from British investors. Slavery itself continued in British colonies for a further three decades and was not finally abolished throughout the trans-atlantic world until the 1880s.
Nevertheless, the British Abolition Act of 1807 was important, not least because the British themselves had until then been the world’s leading slave-traders, by a large margin. With slavery in the British colonies abolished shortly before the accession of Victoria in 1837, a historical narrative developed that glossed over Britain’s determining role in the growth of the slave trade during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, After the passing of Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, British captains who were caught continuing the trade were fined £100 for every slave found on board. However, this law did not stop the British slave trade. If slave-ships were in danger of being captured by the British navy, captains often reduced the fines they had to pay by ordering the slaves to be thrown into the sea.
Some people involved in the anti-slave trade campaign argued that the only way to end the suffering of the slaves was to make slavery illegal. Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. This act gave all slaves in the British Empire their freedom. The British government paid compensation to the slave owners but not the salves who went through this hell-hardship. The amount that the plantation owners received depended on the number of slaves that they had. For example, the Bishop of Exeter's a Roman Catholic. 665 slaves resulted in him receiving £12,700.
Now slavery has took its road to freedom,at list little bright sign toward this incubus lives of our forefather. A tragic -irresponsible of humanity like this may shall never took its course again!

mbye you are right. most roman catholics bishops use to do business with the slave traders. i read a very graphic book last year and i can say ,the evils of slavery cannot be compared to any thing in human history. wilberforce was mainly a figure head but the real abolisionist were the slaves themself in the caribean islands and the u.s .they went on continous strikes and revolts .the american and british mirchants were well connected to the aristocrats and powerful politicians to stop slave trade. some document even prove one catholic pope blessing the slave ships for their voyage. like most crimes against blacks ,the laws comes as a result of some thing else not necessaryly for blacks themself. the real reason the british parliament pass the law against slave trade was the number of white slavers who die as result of several sickness. it is estimated that twenty percent of whites die on there way back from malaria to yellow fever. some were secretly killed by the captain and his high ranking crew so that they will not pay the lower class on the ship.this number of white death actually cause outrage among britsih people which lead parliament to pass the bill. just like racism in football ,it was when eric cantona kick a fan that is what brought in the racism law in football not because black players were racially abused. this are all facts. and also in the acadamic circle of the entire west ,racism was a pass time .many books in arts and theater ,science ,theology and many other feild of study racism was encourage. jokes and many other characteristics were attributed to blacks .i have a book about most of those quotes. people still haven't change a lot , the reason i dislike music like that of lalo keba was the glorifying of some of our warriors who excerbated the slavery practice. it is true that some africans took part in the trade but the inter tribal fights were mostlg created so that the supply of human commodity will not be in short supply. humans ,always taking advange of each other ,that will not stop untill dooms day.there have been so many excuses of slave trade but the parpectrators will burn in the ever lasting fire. may God punished them for ever., |
