I wanted to react to Cornelius' posting in the topic about the Netherlands prohibiting burqas, but to my surprise i found that the topic was locked. How did Cornelius manage to post there?
Anyway, he gave us this link:
http:www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/121644
The newsitem consists some errors: Ahmed Aboutaleb (as we know him) and Nebahat Albayra will not become Ministers in the new government, their position is the one of 'staatssecretaris' - a kind of 'vice-minister' or 'under-minister' if you want. Especially when it comes to Aboutaleb i would like to say that many people in my country would have thought he would get a better place (including me, myself). Among the people that would have liked for him to become full minister, there are not many Morrocans - he is not liked by most of them, he is seen as a 'defector'. As for Nebahat: she is a very businesslike, well-educated young Turkish women - she never wears headdress, let alone a burqa. She is definitely a political talent and she might make it to Minister in governments to come.
The article states that Pim Fortuyn was killed by a man who thought he was 'a menace to certain classes of society' - the article goes on with some of Fortuyn statements about Islam, in this way suggesting that the man who killed him found him to be a menace to the Muslims in our Dutch society. I have said before in the afore mentioned topic that Fortuyn was killed by a Dutchman, a fanatical environmental activist. Fortuyn's murder had nothing at all to do with Islam (in contrast to Van Gogh's murder, which shocked the whole nation because of its beastliness).
The immigration exam in our country is not on 'its way' - these exams have been taken by lots of immigrants already (doesn't matter non-Western or Western). We call it 'inburgeringexamen'. Apart from tests in reading, writing, and speaking the Dutch language, the immigrant should be able to answer questions about (characteristics of) our society, to have some insight in our political system and some topography. Nothing wrong with that, my Gambian partner is studying hard for it - the exam should be passed within a year after the (provisional) residence permit is issued and in our case: the local (city) authorities are paying for his studies. Only when he will not pass, new lessons and a new exam will have to paid for by us, ourselves.

Hi Anna, The topic was locked after his posting. Its good you start a new topic.
Cornelius, I would suggest you start a new topic instead of going on and on as if Bantaba is an archive for your links. |

My pleasure! I should have added that, as a Moroccan, it turns out to be impossible for Ahmed Aboutaleb to ever give up his Morrocan nationality - it is against Morrocan law. I don't know about Ms Albayra - i am sure we will hear more about this in the days to come. |

Holland has had a long (fruitful and profitable) relationship with Muslims for over five hundred years and there are a lot of people from Surinam and the former Dutch East Indian areas, In 1986 there were thirteen mosques in the Hague, and Holland had a Muslim minister of Finance – a follower of the Inayat Khan Sufi order (I attended a lecture that he gave to some Inayat Khan disciples, in Stockholm…….

You say “ not supported by many Moroccans”.Are they a very large immigrant group? How many are they? What percentage of the population of Holland is Muslim?
But today, the complexities about Islam in Holland gather around Hirsi Ali and (and to some extent governed by the brutal murder of Van Gogh Hirsi Ali
Thanks for the enlightenment amicable Anna.
Quite a different cup of tea, what's happening between Muslims and those racists in neighbouring Germany and all their kalabalik debates about the realities of Islam and the West over there in Germany with banning Islamic fashion as religious identity and performing Mozart Operas, still no ministers.

There are 16.4 m people in the Netherlands, 1.7 m are non-Western immigrants, the other day i read in the papers that 1.2 m are Muslims. About 330,000 of them are Moroccan. There have been many heated debates on tv between Ahmed Aboutaleb and young, fanatical Morocan muslims and muslimas.
You talked about this Finance Minister before - i told you that in 1986 Onno Ruding was Minister of Finance. Perhaps the person you were talking about was a 'staatssecretaris' as well.
To tell you the truth, i think that there are unfortunately racist groups in every European country, also in Holland (and in the Scandinavian countries). Maybe you should stop picking on the Germans. |

Yes , Anna,
The person in question is professor Weetoven please> correct my spelling. My keyboard has gone haywire.
The past year or so I\ve been following Holland and Dutch Muslims from here >
http://www.israpundit.com/2006/index.php?s=Holland
I\m certianly not picking on Germans or o9ld Germany / they have their fair share of problems and moreover they are second best friends of Israel in Europe / after Great Britain.
France which has the greatest Jewish population in Europe, is not as popular.......Chirac less so.
