Dynamic growth in global market for solar energy generation Study projects market volume of 25 billion euro by 2010
Freiburg (pts/Feb 2, 2006/09:00) - Intersolar 2006 takes place in Freiburg (Germany) from 22nd to 24th June 2006. The market environment within which this leading trade fair for the photovoltaic, solar thermal technology and solar architecture industry takes place is characterised by extremely strong dynamic growth at world level. In the field of solar energy generation, 2004 saw Germany overtake the long-time leader, Japan. Studies project that by the year 2010, the market volume will be around € 25 billion.
In a market study for which the relevant figures have been increased to match the actual output, the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) estimates the output from newly-installed photovoltaic systems in Germany in 2004 at around 450 megawatts (MWp). Growth in the market in 2004 had previously been assumed to be in the region of 360 MWp. The basis for this reassessment is provided by the most recently published data from the Association of German Network Operators (VDN). In international terms, Germany occupies an excellent position ahead of Japan and the USA, two countries in which 2004 saw the installation of new systems with a capacity of 268 and 90 megawatts (MWp) respectively. Overall, this meant that by the end of 2004 there were solar power generation systems in place within the German grid representing an output capacity of 920 MWp. In Europe, Germany accounts for some 80% of the market.
The prospects for the future are impressive. In photovoltaics - i.e. the generation of power from solar energy - alone, global sales are € 5.8 billion. In recent years, the market has been growing at an average rate of 40% per annum. Market analysts with the French bank Crédit Lyonnais are forecasting a market volume of € 25 billion by the year 2010. A projection based on the installed PV output capacity in leading EU countries indicates a potential for the extended European Union of 26.4 gigawatts (GWp) installed output capacity, in comparison with the current figure of around 1.0 GWp.
This boom is owed to more than just the rising costs for conventional sources of energy, in particular fossil fuels. In Germany, the Renewable Energies Act (EEG) came into force in 1999 and was revised in 2004. It has been the decisive force driving on this development.
It is within this extremely dynamic market environment that Intersolar 2006 takes place from 22nd to 24th June 2006 in Freiburg. This trade fair took place for the first time in 2000 and, along with its associated conference, attracted approximately 20,000 visitors from 60 countries to Freiburg in June last year, thus further consolidating Intersolar's position as Europe's leading solar technology trade fair.
The world's leading manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers and service providers in the solar industry will be exhibiting at Intersolar. The organizers, Messe Freiburg and the Pforzheim-based company Solar Promotion GmbH, are anticipating that 2006 will see well over 400 exhibitors taking part in the event, with some 30% of these coming from outside Germany.
Intersolar 2006 is sponsored by German Solar Industry Association (BSW, formerly BSi and UVS), German Solar Energy Society (DGS), the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF) and the International Solar Energy Society (ISES).
