Immigration is a natural issues and it moves in both directions. While many africans risk going to Europe to make a living others are coming from Europe to Africa to make a living. Its not a one way traffic as most people think.
5.5 million is nearly four times the population of Gambia. |

Kondorong, it is like acculturation: It goes both ways. I think Europeans today are much more 'African' or 'Asian' or... than their ancestors some 100 years ago.

Most people who leave uk do so for better climates due to ill health or to avoid tax.
Some leave to experience another culture (not many!)
SOme for a better, less stressful life style, to get out of the rat race.
An increasing amount leave because they dont like the increased level of migration to the uk, the level of crime etc.....They talk about the 'state the country is in and it's gone to the dogs'. in other words many people who go abroad (especially Spain, South Africa and Australia ) are racist. They dont seem to see the irony of them being migrants to the country they go to!!!!
I would never emigrate. I love england too much. I like the countryside, the cups of tea, the seasons, the people, the tv!!!!
But I hate the darkness of winter and I would love to spend a few months each year chilling out in Gambia! Jan, Feb, March sounds good to me!!!!! This is my dream! |

really you are very funny. but you have a point, reminds me of white South Africans i have met mouning about ''the new banana republic''. most of them did not see the need to emigrate when the worst crimes were being committed under apartheid.
so i take it you are not afraid of Gordon then?

The trend of Jamaicans going back home after retirement has been going since 1980's among the early returnees was my maternal Grandfaher Bertie who was able to fulfil his dream and return to Jamaica to spend his last days.

Njucks, I am a good socalist, so I try to pay my taxes without complaint. But inheritance taxes are a difficult one, you have paid tax on the money once already and then when you die you are heavily taxed on what you leave your children.

It is a lovely thought that many people from Jamaica get to feel some sun on their old bones after suffering our english winters all their working lives. Good luck to them, and a long and healthy retirement!  |

Its because the inheritance is an income for the children and as such attracts tax. Its like a car, anytime you sell it, you pay tax and if sold again it attracts tax. |

Many white english people migrate to Spain, Australia and so on to get away from 'Pakis', 'West Indians' etc.... They dont like the fact that UK has changed rapidly from a mainly white culture to a multicultural society. They think England is in a mess and they want to get out.
Some go for the sunshine, for a fresh start, some run away from problems, so go for work or business opportunities, but many go because they dont like UK society anymore and they worry about the future (violence, crime, islamisation???? and so on).
I think there is an element of racism in that view. |

It's ironic in those stats they didn't mention what portion of ethnic minorities were among the Brits emigrating.
To reveal this stat would give us a real idea of how many non-white emigrants are leaving the UK to have a more realistic picture of the scale of non white immigration in Britain.
I think the rise in property prices ,the high value of sterling, increased taxation, an erosion of civil liberties impact migration more than racism for white pwople because even if a white Brit goes to another European Country he will still be seen as a foreigner and let's face it Britain isn't the most popular country in the world at the moment. I think for non white Britons that institutional racism in Britain would come higher up the agenda for leaving because the system is rampant with discrimination. Too often qualified non- whites find it difficult to obtain employment in the areas which they have been trained in. Therefore you will find Baristers driving taxi cabs etc. And of course the rise of Islamisation my account for 80,000 Asians returning home.
