I have just read an article in The point about refugees from Sierra Leone having a difficult time finding food and work. It also stated that the camp is being closed and they are being sent bank. Is this true? If so, why are they being repatriated?
Does the peaceful Gambia often take in people from other war torn Africa countries? I am interested to know more about this.

Greetings, you can find out more at; www.statehouse.gm/archives.html / Policies in Focus; International peacemaker. The Gambia is a member of the Africa Union / UN / WHO / ECOWAS etc., very small part copy/paste below:
The President's efforts to restore regional peace has also been characterised by a humanitarian dimension as attested by the various refugee camps in The Gambia which have become safe havens for refugees fleeing violence and the ravages of war especially from Sierra Leone and Casamance and at one time Guinea Bissau. As part of its effort to improve conditions in camps, especially at the Kerr Alhassan Camp, A program of food-for-work has been instituted among other positive community schemes. Regards, sab.

Gambev, I was as amazed as you when I was told this. When we stay at my brother-in-law, I see the queue every morning. And there IS a queue every morning. The Gambia is seen as a relatively "rich" country compared to other West African countries. Many people see more opportunities here than in their own country. I think this is one of the reasons why they started issuing ID cards and doing checks because there were so many foreigners.(or so I'm told) I don't believe all these people are escaping war, most of them just want a better life for themselves. Do these refugees believe or know that life is better in Gambia?
Gambev, thanks for bringing that subject up, I think many Westerners will be surprised to see that there are refugees within African countries. |
