Banjul won and celebrated from Independence stadium and all main streets of Banjul city, singing with ambiance "Serrekunda - Duto! Bakau - Chalo!
Chalo (Maninka) = Kobo (Wollof)
Thanks! |

Kobo, the First National Youth Week was in April 1972 or 1973(?). The finals were played at Boxbar Stadium in Banjul. |

Njucks Senegal and Gambia have cultural and sporting programmes together and in those days theier Youth corps or "jeunese nationale" also participated in sports and other cultural groups also.
The Youth Policy or programme under Senghore was "Jeunese Nationale" and other pioneering. |

Njucks, It was both sporting and cultural event for a week. Senegal did not take part as far as I can remember but all divisions did. |

Momodou with due respect as a senior (older) your memories are more dynamic on that event as I was very young to remember many sporting and cultural activities.
However their musical groups and some cultural groups may graced our first Ntaional Youth week for reciprocal reasons as Gambia were usually invited to grace their National events or "Semene Nationale and other cultural programmes during Senegal's independence 4th April!
As rejoiner, why Bakau chalo, Serrekunda Mango and Banjul Ngunja. Each was endowed with those species in abundance and I could remember along Banjul Beaches Ngonja towing of fish boats, processing, drying and smoking factories was seasonally very popular. Mango trees virtually infected the whole of Serrekunda and still Bakau coastal area is the main producer of chalo fish and in abundance for our fish markets.
Thanks Momodou! |
