Africa is well represented in Stockholm in these days, they say that there are 223 occasions to enjoy African culture this autumn. One of them is Africa Remix, a large exhibition of Contemporary African Art, and Selam African (Music) Festival starting next week. Cinemafrica Film Festival is just closed. I went to see ”Conakry Kas” (Conakry People) by the well-know Malian film director and professor Manthia Diawara. An interesting documentary about his return to his childhood´s Conakry from where his family was expelled in the 60s when Sekou Touré came to power. He met artists, intellectuals, politicians and citizens on the streets as well as Harry Belafonte, Danny Glaver, ex-wife of Stokely Carmichael (whose parents didn´t approve of him because of his lack of roots but was decendant of slaves) and Bembeya Jazz National to discuss the past and the future , economy, AIDS, polygamy and of course, music and culture.
After the casting, Diawara also talked about the video industri in Nigeria, ”Nollywood”, which according to him has become third biggest industri in Nigeria, after oil and telecom. The technical quality is quite low and the theme mostly the same – a posh car. BMW och MB drives into a garden, someone opens the door into the house, in the luxury living room people are dressed in Armani suits.
Contrary to his profession, he really liked these videos and while living in Ghana for a couple of years he used to write a list of videos he wanted to byu and went to a shopping center with 40(!) video shops. Every time the shop assistants used to laugh at him: ”Why do you want to buy old videos, they are two monts old! We have new videos!” Besides Ghana, these videos are very popular in Kenya, and he also claimed that now the Gambia has adopted this kind of video making ; all leisure and pleasure
