Foroyaa Editorial NADD AND THE LEADERSHIP QUESTION Many Gambians are now looking up to NADD to come up with a presidential candidate who will be able to create a balance of power in the country that will foster mutual respect between Government and opposition. It is a common notion that if the opposition attracts visible political support from the electorate a two strong party political climate will emerge at least for 2006 to enable the opposition to get the Government to maintain an open society based on the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights and freedom. There is a definite correlation between a strong, objective, mature, popular serious and disciplined opposition and the existence of a more tolerant and open society. A Government must behave well when it is confronted with an opposition that is earning the love of the people because of it own mature conduct. NADD can only weather the current storm and lead the opposition to safer shores if it puts in place a unified leadership that is capable of collective initiatives to create a peaceful atmosphere for electoral contest and inspire hope and confidence in the masses.
The APRC appears to be paralysed by internal conflict. Its survival or otherwise appears to depend on what NADD comes up with. This is why even the Daily Observer has become obsessed with what is happening within NADD. Never in the history of the Gambia have the people of all political shades waited so expectantly of a leadership than the standard bearer of NADD. Rumours have been spreading regarding the dates and the extent of the selection process. Foroyaa has reliably learnt that no flag bearer has been selected yet and that announcement will only come when the selection process is complete. There should be no alarm or false expectations.
