HEAVY RAIN CAUSES HAVOC IN SERREKUNDA
By Sarjo Camara Singhateh

On Friday, 8th September 2006, Churchill's Town and surrounding areas of Serrekunda, KMC, witnessed the heaviest rain since the start of this year's rainy season.

The down pour forced many people to abandon their houses as many dwellings got flooded.
This reporter saw many people busy emptying their houses, because of the floodwater.

The rain caused damages to many houses in some neighbourhoods. Many people expressed their dissatisfaction with the way the high way has been constructed. The drainage system according to them is very poor.
People living on Papa Sarr Street have also bitterly complained and indicated to this reporter that their predicament is the worst because the newly constructed course way rises above their compounds.

A young man, Mr. Bojang, expressed the damage caused by the down pour to them. He stated that their compound was flooded up to the level of their beds and that they had no other means of preventing their household materials getting soaked. An old man who is believed to be in his 80s, lamented that his only house was so inundated, that it collapsed. The old man lamented that he has no place to stay with his family.

Rainy season, after my experience, can be heaven and hell. I think for the normal Gambian it is likely to be the latter. This rainy season was/is hard. I saw flooded houses around Serrekunda, roads like rivers, mudholes, or full of 'ponds', in Latri Kunda (south), Ebotown, Dippa Kunda, and other places. Everything gets damaged - cars, houses, furniture, etc. Because of the water which is staying for days in the ponds on the streets, Malaria is highly virulent. If the government is really serious in its fight against Malaria, they should first look after the roads! Today, back in Germany, I spoke with a collegue who travelled many countries in Africa and Asia, and he confirmed that Gambian roads are the worst.

But tourists can enjoy this season. I found the beach much, much nicer than in winter! The Atlantic Ocean is warm, there is always a smooth breeze, and those who are after a suntan can get it even when the sky is cloudy (but, dear toubab, take care - though you don't see the sun, it is much, much more powerful than in winter. In the first few days your sunburn is guaranteed without a sun protection). Take a shower in the rain and your skin gets smooth like a baby's popo! The damp heat, which makes you sweat like hell if you go to town, is very moderate at the beach. There are not significantly more mosquitoes than in winter, only in very wet places in town they come out at daytime. Gambia should by all means promote rainy season as a second tourist season!
