i'm sorry but the official booklet of what you have to pay tax on is a BOOK. a printed database. no one will put it up on the airport.
i think what you paid the airline and customs taxes are seperate.
once at the airport they tried to do the same with a Dutch lady, she refused and asked for his name and superiors. in the end they had to let her go.
don't be a softie to such nonsense. you only encourage it and other people would be bigger victims. |

bev, i did not have a problem paying the tax,it was the amount £4.50 per phone, I think not, secondly he just disappeared and left me sitting there, it was myself and two other people, one of them was a gambian who had brought in a television. we all had the same argument, if we have to pay taxes then how much, easy question, it came back like this. it depends on how much the phone cost. I said nothing they were donations . It was a stupid situation, my friends were furious. I have never taken a phone into gambia again. I would love to but until someone can tell me in advance what the tax is, i am not doing it . It would help alot of my friends and their families, but they will not get it from me. but if you want to help, try this, (on the QT put mobile phone batteries in your pockets or hand luggage, put them on your person let them search your luggage and you can sail through. the small batteries for Nokia's are like gold dust go on bev give it a go. |

jack, thank you for the description of the situation in rural Gambia. I have been reading extensively about Gambia from various sources. Some sources have anecdotes from the viewpoint of the visitors. I look at recent pictures on Flickr from time to time. I'm trying to get the viewpoint of the real Gambians in this forum. I beg your understanding.
I grew up in South India way back when. I have some idea of the situation in Gambia, which mirrors our situation in many ways. Our experience gives me great optimism. We used to be depressed about the Indian Government just like you are with the Gambian Government. It turns out that widespread education over a generation enabled us to turn the corner, which increases my conviction in the power of education.
I also agree with your position on "sustainable projects". Therefore, for now we're sticking to the paper format of the National Geographic Magazines! :-)

gambiabev, you're absolutely right about the brilliant night sky without light pollution. Even the milky way is visible!
You certainly know how to make the most of the situation! :-)
