Itīs a pity, I must admit I donīt have much knowledge of african music.
The cathegory worldmusic is not considered as "hip" and I donīt think it will ever break through properly and have a big market here in the west, unfortunately people are not that interested in traditional music nomatter what culture itīs from. Especially not among youths. I could be wrong but I really doubt it.
I think that the only music that have potential to make it big are new groups like Magic system.

you are right, obviously it not 'hip' and doesnt make the charts, and it shouldnt otherwise it will loose its uniqueness. its just like Cinema. most movies are from Holywood but several movies are made in European cinema and they are good movies with good script and talented people. i loved Lock, Stock & Two smoking Barrels when it first came out and Amelie as well.

even in Africa, this type of music finds its audience amongst the older generation and married people. just like folk music in Europe as well.

young people just want to have a good time first, thats where pop music comes in

Personally I do listen to some african music at times, such as Cesaria Evora, Salif Keita, Amadou & Mariam... and there is this man who sings "Dibi dibi rek" and "Senegambia" etc, whoīs name I forgot.
And besides Magic system and Keysha, Tiken Jah Fakoly is also a favorite.

Babylon,
I am suprised of your answers. You are not familier with African Music. Södra Teatern, Riks konserter and even SELAM and Jalikunda Stockholm do have African musicians in different sceans in Stockholm. Even Jerico in Malmö do too. You are invited to come and listen this year at Botkyrkahallen and mångkulturcenter in Fittja. Please visit Muliti kulti at Slussen for more information. You seem to lack knoledge of African music. In regards Hip Hop and rap, it is mostely youngerstars that listen to it. You must try and visit the places I have mentioned. Even Sollo Cissokho and Ellika Frisell(a Swedish) worn the BBC worldmusic prize tre years ago. We have even Kora students who have more than 7 generation Swedish and they are even known in the Gambia. Soussou Cissokho and Andreas Åkersson I mean. Otherwise Babylon please visit Stallet (the only world music scene in Stockholm) by at the Swedish konsert Institute. I work there sometimes with children konsert production. Also visit www.jalikunda.se for more information.

Babylon,
Dont you know the origins of the types of music you mentioned. They all originate from the Cultural Music we present. Baba Bluse is an old Swedish group that has just given out a CD with Tata Dindin called Kora and Bluse. You can continue to listen to the type of music you want. Every body has he/her own taste in music. We all cannot like the same thing, then there would not be a verity.
