Published on Thursday, 28 November 2013

Foroyaa received information that a theft suspect under arrest and handcuffed by the police escaped from custody and plunged himself into the sea. He was drowned. This reporter went to the scene to find out what actually happened the following day at the said terminal. A friend who spoke to this reporter intimated that the suspect, a Senegalese citizen who was arrested on Wednesday 20 November, 2013, at the Banjul Seaport Terminal threw himself into the sea and died.

He told Foroyaa that a woman reported the suspect to the police alleging that he stole something from her at the Banjul/Barra Ferry Terminal.
According to him, the deceased is one Pa Morr Gaye, a native of Thies, Senegal, who has been residing in the Gambia for about a decade now, but met his untimely death after escaping Police custody.
According to a source, after Mr. Gaye suddenly escaped, he ran to the dock and dived into the sea, he was not seen. But as the search for his corpse continued, the body was recovered on Friday 22 November 2013.
Close associates of the deceased said the lady who reported him to the police was later arrested and put under Police custody, but later released on Friday 22 November 2013. The sources further reveal that the officer in charge during his escape was also arrested and detained at the Police headquarters in Banjul.

The Police PRO, Mr. David Kujabi, was contacted several times to shed light on this tragedy; but he said he was not in the picture but would find out today.
A credible source informs this reporter that Modou Narr and Co who were reportedly eyewitnesses to the incident were also arrested later by the Police and detained at the Police headquarters in Banjul.
