GAMBIA COLLEGE FOOD STORE EMPTY By Modou Jonga
According to reliable sources there is no food supply on campus at The Gambia College, which has led to the closure of the college kitchen since Friday, 31st June 2006.
When contacted, Mr. Masanneh Camara, the newly elected Nutrition Minister of the students’ Sub-Union, confirmed that there has actually been food shortage in the college for over two hundred and four students living on campus. “I have really inherited a completely empty food store from my predecessor,” he said.
Students who spoke to this reporter described the lack of supply at the college food shortage as a sad and terrible situation and said that they are indeed finding it difficult to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, the President of the students’ Sub-Union, Mr. Lamin Kanteh, while expressing gratitude to President Jammeh for his previous assistance, has appealed once again to him, parastatals, civil society organisations, and individual philanthropists to come to their aid by doing whatever they can inorder to rescue them from this situation.
When contacted, the Principal of the College said that he was not aware of any such food shortage on campus. He directed this reporter to the students, whom he said were responsible for their own feeding. “The College only provides education and not feeding for the students,” he concluded.

momodou, this situation is stupid look at the lack of communication between the departments. point one Mr. Masanneh Camara, the newly elected Nutrition Minister of the students’ Sub-Union, confirmed that there has actually been food shortage in the college for over two hundred and four students living on campus. “I have really inherited a completely empty food store from my predecessor,” he said. point two When contacted, the Principal of the College said that he was not aware of any such food shortage on campus. He directed this reporter to the students, whom he said were responsible for their own feeding. “The College only provides education and not feeding for the students,” he concluded. What happened to communication, is the college responsible for feeding 204 students on campus, have they paid for their food, are they all living on site. What have they been doing since 31st june, eating grass. why can't they talk to each other. Mr Lamin Kanteh made an appeal to civil society organsiations, philantroists to come to the their aid. this is the colleges fault, bad management.

Kons, I attended Yundum College. At that time all students pay for their lodging and food. We had good food and it was enough. There was never a sortage. What has happened now? Are the students getting free food? What do they do with their allowances? |

Until recently the Gov't/Ministry of Education used to pay Gambia College subvention which was supposed to take care of staff salaries, administrative costs and feeding of the students. Kons saying that the feeding stopped come 1994 IS GROSSLY MISLEADING. Up to 2001 the college was feeding its students. There was a stand-off between the Ministry and the College's principal then jenung Manneh. The gov't throgh the ministry was granted world bank loan which was in phases. The college benfited from those loans with more classrooms, labs, computers and staff training overseas. The dishonesty amongst some dept heads in the Gambia came about and the training vote was abused by overtraining certain favoured staff. That's just one part. The world bank recommended to gov't through ministry of education to double its annual college in-take in the school of education to be precise. This was to the world bank a requirement for their loans. The problem of housing and feeding was oversighted or deliberate. Problems of housing and feeding immediately emerged around the summer of 2001. It was at this juncture that the ministry advised the principal Manneh to try to generate LOCAL REVENUE as is done in other institutions in the region. The college would have offered services such as Sheep fattening projects, consultancies, community computer literacy ect. Monies generated from these ventures would go to make for the shortfalls. But Manneh for reasons best known to him alone never hournored that. He instead mobilise the illietrate ancillary staff and told them that he would sack them because there is no more money from gov't. The kitchn staff were the main victims. Here is a dept which was overstaffed yet they were kept there because of MASLAHA. When the Jenoi centre closed and the coops centre closed all their staff were deployed to Gambia College.
Because of the feet dragging by someone in the person of Jenung Manneh, the college started rotting literally. The college which was once a pride of the nation worth D16million in those days has gone down. Maybe its new principal can turn round its fortunes. So gov't through the ministry of education decided that to tackle the housing problem, students will only spend a year on campus and the remaining out in the fields to make for room for other students and to act as trainee teachers in the schools country wide. The Feeding was to be only Lunch was to be provided and breakfast and dinner was to be taken care of by the students who were paid stipends and some were on studyleave with salary.
That was the arrangement in place. What messed it up i don't know. |

i have noticed these traits too. he tends to imply and generalise about information and these could be easily picked by people who dont know the country well. i not sure if it is disinformation or misinformation but most of his other posting are very good.

That was the amount the jawara gov't spent in to put up the College. It was state of the art then. It could have been close to £2million then. It was inaugurated in 1984/85 or so. |

What i mean by come 1994 is that, it stopped under the watch of the current government which started in 1994. May be you should ask what i mean before passing judgement. It is therefore not misleading. May be its a matter of understanding how i express my self in some situations. |
