PROTESTING ABOUT SMEAR CAMPAIGN BUT IGNORING KEY POINTS IN THE POLITICAL DIALOGUE
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Monday, 11 November 2013
The government has been vehemently complaining against what it refers to as a smear campaign, but has not make overtures in practice to show that it is providing some remedy to concerns raised by its partners. One of the major concerns expressed is the closure of Taranga FM, Standard and the Daily News. Many of the employees of these media houses are now out of work which is adding to poverty. Needless to say, those who follow Senegalese TV and radio would admit that the Gambia is missing a lot in terms of investment in media establishments which could attract millions in foreign direct investment. The quality of debate also enriches a nation and enables people to be aware.
It is unfortunate that even state visitors are not exposed to press conferences that would enable them to interact with media practitioners so as to know what others think about their administrations and country. Progress needs to be made in restoring the operation of the media houses that have been closed and open up press conferences to diverse media houses.
