EU temporally halts funding for Gambia road project amid rights displeasure
Xinhua: 2013-11-10
The EU has decided to temporally halt the funding of 10 million euros for Gambia's road project amid its displeasure with the West African country's human rights situation.
"The European Development Fund held a vote on October 30, on giving 13 million euros to the Gambian government. However, due to the lack of consensus, 10 million euros was withheld and the vote has been postponed until November 21," a EU official told Xinhua on Saturday.
"A small number of countries voted against the grant due to the Gambia's worsening human rights situation," the official said.
"The 10 million was intended for the construction of roads, and if the government does not receive the money by the end of the year, then it will be retained within the EU budget and the money will not be given to the Gambia, as it has to be distributed before the end of the year," the official added.
The Gambian ambassador assigned to Belgium has also notified Banjul about the EU's decision not to release the aid package as some countries are not satisfied with the government's rights and governance records.
