Prison officer admonished and discharged
africa » gambia
Wednesday, October 02, 2013
Sub-inspector Alimou Jallow of the Prisons Department was yesterday admonished and discharged by Principal Magistrate Lamin Mbai of Banjul Magistrates’ Court.

This followed Sub-inspector Jallow’s own plea of guilt after he was arraigned before the court for aiding one Alhagie Touray to escape from lawful custody.

According to the particulars of offence on count one, on 14 September 2013, the convict, Alimou Jallow, whilst on duty as a prison officer at the remand wing of the State Central Prison Mile 2, aided the escape of a trial prisoner, Alhagie Touray, by unlocking the remand prison doors and thereby committed an offence.

Count two sated that on 14 September 2013, whilst as a prison officer at the remand wing of the State Central Prisons Mile 2, neglected his duty by allowing the escape of a trial prisoner, Alhagie Touray and thereby committed an offence.

In his plea of mitigation, the convicted person, Alhagie Touray, told the court he had been working for the prisons department for 13 years without any single problem of such nature.

He noted that this was purely a mistake and it would never happen again.

Delivering the sentence, the trial magistrate said he had carefully listened to the plea of mitigation by the accused person, and he also considered the fact that the accused person was a first-time offender in the eyes of the law.

“The accused person has shown enough sign of remorsefulness for what he had committed. I also consider the fact that the convict is a young man who has great future ahead of him,” he said.

In light of the above facts and under section 266 of the CPC, the convict was hereby admonished and discharged on all the charges, he said.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
