by Lamin Sanyang

Foroyaa: Published on Monday, 16 September 2013

Information reaching this paper has it that the security operatives have cracked down on two factories on Friday, 13 September, for allegedly using expired raw materials to produce cheese balls locally known as ‘chips’ that were circulated to shops for public consumption. Sources have it that the two factories are involved in alleged dubious activities. It is reported that they have been engaged in such alleged practices for a long time before the recent crackdown resulting in the arrest of five Indian nationals, Rajish Kumar, Jaitrakash Tammananc, Raghu Rajarman, Nurman Surtada and Anthony Nathan.
“The five people have been arrested for using expired raw materials to produce cheese balls locally called ‘chips’. Among the ingredients used, the corn and flour were said to have been expired and infected with worms and insects. They have deliberately neglected health implications and went on to use these cheese balls that are circulated in the market,” said ASP David Kujabi, Spokesperson of The Gambia Police Force.
According to the police spokesperson, the brand of cheese balls produced by the said factory is called ‘Harps Cheese Balls’.
He said the ‘Harps Cheese Balls’ are circulated within shops and supermarkets in the country by the same factory. It is alleged that the consumption of these expired products could be hazardous to the public. ASP Kujabi revealed that the five foreign nationals arrested are currently under investigation. He further revealed that the matter was reported to the police by health personnel. Editor’s Note Foroyaa will obtain the views of the factory owners on the allegation.

Again, Good Job,people should not be exposed to "food unfit for human consumption," D100,000 is not chicken feed (toubab joke,OK) there is no indication in the report as to whether the convicts were given time to pay or not, I suspect that Gambian fines are payable immediately (are they ?) so if these 5 cannot pay they will spend some time at "The Hotel"
