The death has been announced of a veteran politician and a former vice president of the Republic of The Gambia during the First Republic under the rule of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Hassan Musa Camara, a native of Basse Mansajnag and resident of Banjul, met his untimely death Sunday evening at his residence at 51 New Perseverance Street in Banjul.

A member of the Jawara-led PPP party after it was formed in 1959, the late Hassan Musa Camara was very instrumental in the political dispensation of the country and in its independence struggle.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Observer Sunday, a veteran broadcaster and historian, Alhaji Mansour Njie, said the late Camara was brought up by the late Reverend JC Faye, leader of The Gambia Democratic Party.

“He started as a teacher at Kristi Kunda in the Upper River Region (URR). He was a member of the United Party of Pierre Sarr Njie before joining the PPP when it was formed. He also served in various ministerial capacities before becoming one of The Gambia’s vice presidents,” Njie narrated to the Daily Observer.

The veteran broadcaster described the deceased as someone who dedicated all his life to politics in the country, reiterating that he was “among the pioneers of The Gambia’s independence.”

“The late Camara also contested and won on several occasions the Kantora Parliamentary seat. He was a pious Muslim and survived by a wife and children. He also contributed immensely towards the socio-economic development of The Gambia In fact during the 1981 abortive coup, the late Camara served as acting president as Jawara was away at the time. After his breakaway with the PPP, he founded the Gambia People’s Party (GPP),” Mansour Njie added.

The late Hassan Musa Camara will be laid to rest tomorrow at 5pm at the Old Jeshwang Cemetery.

Meanwhile, the Daily Observer was informed by family members that a state funeral will be offered to the late politician.

The Gambia yesterday, Monday,16 September, paid their last respects to Honourable Assan Musa Camara, a former Vice President and National Assembly for Kantora in the First Republic, who was laid in state at the National Assembly Chambers in Banjul. The late Hon. Camara, who was born in 1923 and was 90 years, passed away on Sunday,11 September,2013 at ten minutes to five, after a long illness. His remains were taken to the King Fahad Mosque in Banjul for the Muslim prayers and finally laid to rest at the Old Jeshwang Cemetery. He was a native of Basse Mansajang in the Upper River Region of the Gambia. Speaking at a solemn ceremony, the Vice President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs. Isatou Njie Saidy, said they can attest to the fact that the late Assan Musa Camara played his part well in the world until his death.
She added that the late Camara believed that the world is a stage and that they are all passing through it. She said if anyone wants to show any good thing he should do it now, noting that no one would pass through this world again. Madam Njie Saidy described him as a man who was committed to the country and his family and had also served the people of Kantora in the Upper River Region (URR). She said the late Camara was honourable, kind, disciplined, selfless, religious, experienced and knowledgeable. She said he was a retired public servant and politician as well as father and grandfather.
She recalled that the late Camara served the country in various capacities in the government of the first republic. She said the deceased shall be missed by all those that met him. She expressed hope that the family and people who knew him at the time would learn from his experience and keep it alive. Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Majority leader and member for Serrekunda East, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, said the late Assan Musa Camara was a great servant of the country who served his constituency and nation with diligence, selflessness and respect. Also speaking on behalf of the family members, Hassan Touray, a nephew to the late Camara, said the deceased started getting sick a year ago and was taken for treatment to hospitals in the country and then Dakar,Senegal, and finally to Kenya until the family decided to bring him back home where he finally died on Sunday at around ten minutes to five in the afternoon.

Mr. Touray described the day as both a sad and joyous day for the family after recalling the achievements made by their late patriarch whose demise, he said, is not only a loss to the family but the entire nation. He described his late uncle as a man of integrity, wisdom and an educationist who lived a very simple and modest life that all cherish. He said Pa Assan is capable of leading the world and urged everyone to try to emulate him and pray for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
The National Assembly Members for Bakau, Hon. Khalifa Jammeh, said the late Camara was a true servant of the country. He said the late Camara served his country with dedication and commitment. He said the friends of the deceased have described him as a man who was full of humour, exemplary in conduct and courteous in manner. He finally prayed for the soul to rest in peace.
Mr. Femi Peters, who described the late statesman as his mentor, and Alhaji M.C. Cham, a colleague and former minister in the PPP regime, both spoke about the virtues of Hon. Camara. Other speakers at the ceremony also described him as a selfless man who had contributed his quota towards the development of the country and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
The late Assan Musa Camara served the former PPP government in many capacities as a cabinet minister. From 1962 to 1982, he served in various cabinet portfolios including Education, External Affairs, Local Government, among others, up to the level of Vice President, a position he occupied from May 1972 to May 1977 and again from August 1978 to May 1982. He was the sitting Member of Parliament for Kantora Constituency all throughout this duration. Hon. Camara formed the Gambia People’s Party (GPP) in 1986 together with the late M.L. Saho (former Attorney General and Minister of Justice) and H. O. Semega Janneh (former Minister of Information and Tourism) and contested as its presidential candidate in both the 1987 and 1992 presidential elections.

Prior to joining politics with the United Party (UP) of the late Pierre Sarr Nijie together with his colleague Michael Baldeh of Basse, he was a teacher and headmaster. Hon. Camara is survived by his wife and life-long partner, five sons, two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF AN ERA IN GAMBIAN POLITICS BOTH SHERIFF AND ASSAN ARE GONE

Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Tuesday, 17 September 2013

Assan Musa Camara, fondly called Uncle Assan by younger political leaders, is gone. The parties of the first Republic just before the coup were the PPP, the ruling party, and in the opposition, the NCP led by Sheriff Dibba, the GPP led by Assan Musa Camara, the PDOIS and the PDP led by Bolong Bojang. The leaders of the PDOIS and PDP belong to a younger generation and were in their late thirties and forties when the coup occurred 19 years ago in 1994. He did not bother to register the GPP when the ban was lifted.

According to his colleagues, he continued to propagate the virtues of democratic governance up to his death. The State laid him at the National Assembly for the host, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Vice President, Cabinet Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, former Ministers, Students, Party leaders, Family members and friends to pay their last respects.
All agreed that he has displayed an exemplary conduct as a school teacher, master and public figure in the parliamentary and executive domain. They recounted all his Ministerial posts up to the rank of Vice President in the first Republic. Sheriff Dibba also rose up to the rank of Vice President in the first Republic and Speaker of the National Assembly in the second Republic. However they are no more. A new generation is unfolding and fundamental lessons need to be drawn in order to engage destiny in a new way. The lesson is clear. Life is transient. No human being could be a Minister, National Assembly Member, President or Vice President for ever.

Illness or old age may take away any one of us. Hence the important question each of us must ask is: What type of legacy do we want to leave behind? What type of Gambia do we want to leave behind for our children and children’s children to inherit? Once these questions are answered, then we should start today to do the things that are necessary to leave such a legacy and build such a country. Assan Musa Camara has played his part.
The future will tell what part we shall play. History shall tell the story and posterity shall be the judge.
