FAO HANDS OVER SEEDS AND FERTILISER WORTH D27 MILLION TO AGRIC

"The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has on Tuesday,25th June,2013 handed over to the Department of Agriculture varieties of seeds and fertilizer worth over D27 Million at a ceremony held at the Department of Agriculture (DOA) in Cape Point, Bakau. The seeds that were handed over comprise rice, groundnuts, maize, cowpea and vegetables seeds and the fertilizer are NPK and Urea.

Delivering a statement on behalf of the FAO Country Representative, the Deputy FAO Country Representatives Mariatou Faal Njie said overall objective of the FAO programme among other things is to improve the food and nutrition security of vulnerable populations in the Sahel and that its specific objective is to safeguard and strengthen the resilience of livelihoods of farmers, pastoralists and agro-pastoralists, as well as other vulnerable groups threatened by the 2011/12 crisis.

The FAO Country Rep said “Resilience” for them is the ability to prevent disasters and crises or to anticipate, absorb, accommodate or recover from those that impact nutrition, agriculture, food security and food safety (and related public health risks) in a timely, efficient and sustainable manner, adding that these include protecting, restoring and improving structures and functions of food and agricultural systems under threat. “It is therefore a great pleasure to be here today to witness the handing over of seeds and fertiliser to the Ministry of Agriculture in response to 2011 food and nutrition crisis in the sahel,” said the FAO Rep.

The FAO Country Representative further said this assistance is aimed at rehabilitating the productive capacities and increasing the resilience of vulnerable households affected by natural hazards and that the agricultural inputs they are handing over comprise of 117 metric tonnes of maize seeds, which cost D4,299,750; 98 metric tonnes of rice seeds, which cost D3,240,300; 45 metric tonnes of groundnut seeds, which cost D 582,720; 50 metric tonnes of cowpea seeds, which cost D2,844,625; 1015kilograms of vegetable seeds, which cost D 3,366,900. Of this amount, said the Rep,365kilogram was given to office of the Vice President for women vegetable growers under the Women’s Bureau,18 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer, which cost D509,562 and 480 metric tonnes of Urea Fertilizer costing D 10,538,640..."
