Folks,

Congrats to the winner of the mayoral position in Banjul, no doubt. Let us not forget that history repeats itself and the kind of political atmosphere under Jammeh has been repeating itself. While I agree with the masses that a peaceful change of power is possible, I bet to differ seriously, because under the given conditions, a defeat of Jammeh can only come if he dies, overthrown, or through an aggression that forces him to leave. The mechanism for fair elections is not in place. Forget about the so-called IEC. Not to mention of media coverage especially from the only TV, Jammeh's own GRTS.

I just want to give this disclosure that I do not know this winner and I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If he is Independent, so be him...

Part of my worry stems from that of Banjul's former Independent Mayor, Pa Sallah Jeng, a perfect gentleman who was really independent in his mind and body. He fought tooth and nail with a system much more powerful than he was able to fight back. He ran out of amory and had to leave for exile. I met him couple of years ago in Atlanta where he delievred a very powerful speech. He likened Jammeh to Adolf Hitler in their display of arrogance, barbarism and neglect for human dignity.

Gambia's politics has proved to be more of a money-making venture (greed, selfisness, opportunity) than a political venture (politics of body and mind liberation) to rescue the masses. What we have seen most of the time in these independents are people desparate to contest, who most of the time couldn't get the APRC candidature due to the nature of the rotten political system where favotism by association has hijacked decency. Thus, this automatically defaults them to an independent candidate. Soon afterwords, you realized that they slowly creep towards where they belong. In pular we say when you release a calf, it goes right back to the mother.

As it stands, we need a decent citizen who enters politics not for his pocket or name, but one that enters politics with a view to change the rotten system of terror, corruption, fear, under development, and overal try to give hope for citizens. Such a citizen will fight the sytem that has taken hostage of Gambians.

So what I am thinking is this: If the guy is independent and he is not willing to dance to the Jammeh's tone, he certainly will be a victim just like his other predecessor, Pa Sallah Jeng. If he is someone who was denied the APRC ticket and that defaulted him to the independent candidate ticket, we will soon see him leaning towards Jammeh.

In conclusion, congrats to Mr. Bah and I look forward to his contributions and hope that he will not betray the trust and confidence reposed in him.

Best regards,

Yero

1. ACCORDING TO OBSERVER NEWS IT WAS REPORTED UNDER QUOTE;
quote:
"Carayol also disclosed that for the April elections, the APRC fielded candidates in all the 114 wards, while 10 candidates were nominated through the NRP ticket. He added that 40 independent candidates also got their candidature endorsed by the IEC for councillorship."

2. RECONCILING WITH ABOVE AND SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS;

TOTAL NO. OF WARDS 114 = APRC MAYOR/COUNCILLORS 104 (68 UNOPPOSED & 36 WON) + 10 INDEPENDENTS CANDIDATES THAT WON (1 BANJUL MAYOR & 9 COUNCILLORS)

APRC CANDIDATES = 114 (68 UNOPPOSED + 36 WON + 10 LOST)

NRP TICKET =(OBSERVER NEWS REPORTED 10 BUT IEC DISCLOSED 9 AND ALL LOST)

INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES = 40 (10 WON + 30 LOST)

This unfortunate reaction to the Local Government Election Results outlined by Foroyaa:

Burning Issues
ARRESTS AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF ELECTION RESULTS
Published on Monday, 08 April 2013 12:42 | Written by Suwaibou Touray
Foroyaa has been receiving reports of post electoral violence, arrests, detention and harassment after the announcement of the results of the just concluded local government election. We publish the reports from the different wards below. Sare Soffi Ward By Suwaibou Touray
Mr. Dawda K. Ceesay, the winner of the Councillorship election in Sare Soffi ward informs this paper that his supporters are being insulted and threatened immediately after the results were announced on Friday 5th April. Ceesay said he himself received threats that he would be arrested later on and a by election would then take place because the APRC will never accept him to take the seat at the Council. He said the police arrested his supporter, one Mr. Lasana Fatty on the 6th of April from Bantanto, who is a night watch man at the school. He also informs this paper that Mr.Manneh Sama of Bantanto, his campaign manager was also put under arrest yesterday 7th April by the Bansang Police. Asked why he thinks they are arresting his supporters, Mr. Ceesay said he does not know but said he was being informed by a relative who accompanied Lasana to the station that the police at Bansang told Lasana that the reason for his arrest is in connection to a theft case reported by some people recently that something was stolen at the Senior Secondary School last year, 2012; that it was he Lasana who allegedly stole it. Asked what Lasana said, he said Lasana denied knowing anything about it and he was put in cell up till the time of going to press. Manneh Sama, Dawda said was detained on Saturday morning after answering to a police request that he was wanted at the station. Asked what might be responsible for such an order, Dawda said the report he received from the station is about pregnancies and concoctions. He asked Foroyaa to try to make sense of the cause of the arrest. All he could say is that these people supported him during his campaign. Asked whether he knows the people who made the allegation at the police station against Manneh Sama, Dawda mentioned the names of some APRC supporters from Bantanto village. He said Sama is still detained at the station. In an another development, on Friday 5th April, the former Councillor of the Sare Soffi ward, Mr Amadou Jallow, was also arrested at Janjangbureh while attending the training of the 2013 population Census but was later transferred to Bansang. According to Mr. Saikou Omar, his relative, they were told that he was reported to have withdrawn money from the accounts of Sare Soffi ward development committee disbursed by the CDDP to purchase a tractor on behalf of the ward committee which the police say they are investigating. According to information, Amadou is still being detained at the Bansang police station. He said these are the main constraints they are bedeviled with since the results were announced. The IEC and the Police PRO could not be reached at the time of going to the press yesterday. A Tense Atmosphere at Tallinding After Results Lamin Sanyang
Information reaching this paper has it that the Mayor elect of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) and National Mobiliser for the ruling party was moving with his supporters along the street where the Councillor elect Mr Sanusi Touray resides and that his supporters allegedly assaulted the family of Mr. Sanusi Touray, by throwing stones and broken bottles into his compound without being stopped by the National Assembly member and the Mayor elect. That to add insult to injury two of his supporters were put under detention on Saturday 6th April. “Yesterday (Saturday April 6th), Mayor Yankuba Colley, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Hon. Sainey Jaiteh and Banna Badjie, former Councilor among others were present while their supporters started throwing stones and broken bottles into my compound leaving a five year child injured,” asserted Mr. Sanusi Touray, elected councilor of Tallinding Ward. The victorious Independent candidate said the Mayor of Kanifing Municipality has made several defamatory words against him. He claimed it has been declared in the open that he would not get his seat at the council. He also claimed that it has been declared that his family is an enemy to the Mayor. “I will go to the council because I am elected by the people of Tallinding Ward and I will stand by them,” he angrily reacted. Councilor Touray inquired the reason for harassing his family members and supporters for contesting as an independent candidate. He said no one is above the law. He said he has all rights to stand as an independent candidate in the election. The Tallinding Ward Councilor also complained about the arrest of two supporters by the police as one of them was released while the other is still under detention for 3 days. According to him, the two old men were arrested after they had an encounter with a young supporter of the defeated councillor who insulted them on their way to the mosque. He revealed that the Station Officer (SO), Superintendent Anthony Korea, of Tallinding police station said the matter is above him. In the meantime, Mr. Fabakary Badjie, the brother of the Alkalo (village head) of Tallinding who was arrested with the other supporter and later released told this paper about the things done to him at his compound by the supporters of Mayor Colley. The old man said the two of them were arrested and taken to the police station while the boy who was insulting them was released. He said he was released on the same day. He said he asked the Station Officer to release his colleague as he is equally innocent but the officer said things were above him. Mr. Badjie asserted that they were referred to the police commissioner at Serrekunda station for the release of the other accused. He said commissioner Bojang told them that the person who was supposed to release him has crossed to Niumi but would return before 3pm which he said was never the case. He complained that the old man is still detained at the station. The old man lamented the attitude of Mayor Yankuba Colley and Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta with their supporters. He said they tolerated the insults heaped on his mother before throwing stones and broken bottles at his compound. He said he could have shed tears because he is far older than all of them. He said he was surprised the Mayor and Hon. Jatta did not stop the supporters from insulting him. “Enough is enough, I cannot take it anymore. This country is supposed to be a democratic country; people have the right to support any candidate of their choice. We expect leaders to be exemplary in conduct,” the old man charged. Mr. Kebba Ceesay, the other suspect was visited at the police station. He is an old man of over 60 years of age. He said he was detained for 3 days sleeping on a long bench. It is claimed that he has high blood pressure and is seriously being bitten by mosquitoes. Hon. Babu Gaye Sonko, nominated member of National Assembly was spotted at the station during the visit of this reporter. He was approached but said: “I have nothing to say. It is not my case. I have nothing to do with the case,” he replied and walked away to the office of the Station Officer. Mayor Elect Yankuba Colley of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) and National Mobiliser of the ruling APRC party was contacted by phone. He was informed of the allegations against him but he refuted the entire allegations levelled against him. He claimed his mother is living in the same area at Tallinding and has all rights to pass along that road when celebrating his victory. The KMC Mayor Elect said he is not aware of the arrest of Fabakary Badjie and Kebba Ceesay by the police. In the same vein, he said it is their business for being arrested. He said he has nothing to do with them. “Some of them came to my family home and insulted me but I did not report them to the police,” he disclosed. Mayor Elect Colley said he was in the midst of celebration with his supporters at Latrikunda and has no time for such problems. He claimed he is a peaceful person and would always discourage his supporters from participating in any form of violence or disrespectful attitude. Meanwhile, Superintendent Anthony Korea, Station Officer (SO) of Tallinding police station declined to comment. He referred the reporter to the Office of the Police PRO at the headquarters in Banjul. The Police PRO could not be reached at the time of going to the press.
