What is Islam?
Islam is not a new religion, but the same truth that God revealed through all His prophets to every people for a fifth of the world’s population. Islam is both a religion and a complete way of life. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy and forgiveness and the majority have nothing to do with the extremely grave events, which have come to be associated with their faith.
Who are the Muslims?
One billion people from a vast range of races, nationalities and cultures across the globe – from the Southern Philippines to Nigeria – are united by their common Islam faith. About 18% live in the Arab world; the world’s largest Muslim community is in Indonesia; substantial parts of Asia and most of Africa are Muslim, while significant minorities are to be found in the Soviet Union, China, North and South America, and Europe.
What do Muslims believe?
Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable God; in the angels created by Him; in the prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind; in the Day of Judgment and individual accountability for actions; in God’s complete authority over human destiny and in life after death. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets starting with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmad, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist and Jesus, peace be upon them. But God’s final message to man, a reconfirmation of the external message and a summing-up of all that has gone before was revealed to the prophet Muhammad through Gabriel.
How does someone become a Muslim?
Simply by saying: “there is no god apart from Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”. By this declaration the believer announces his or her faith in all God’s messengers, and the scriptures they brought.
What does Islam mean?
The Arabic word ‘Islam’ simply means ‘Submission’ and derives from a word meaning ‘Peace’. In a religious context it means complete submission to the well of God. Muhammadanism is this a misnomer because it suggests that Muslims worship Muhammad rather than God.
What does the word ‘Allah’ means?
Allah is the name of the one true God. Nothing else can be called Allah. The term has no plural or gender. This shows its uniqueness when compared with the word god, which can be made plural gods or feminine goddess. The one true God is a reflection of the unique concept that Islam associates with God. To a Muslim, Allah is the Almighty, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, who is similar to nothing and nothing is comparable to him. The Qur’an says: Say (O Muhammad) He is God the one God, the Everlasting Refuge, who has not be gotten, nor has been begotten and equal to Him is not anyone. (112)
Why does Islam often seem strange?
Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion does not dominate everyday life in the West today, whereas Muslims have religion always uppermost in their minds, and make no division between secular and sacred. They believe that the Divine Law, the Shari’a should be taken very seriously, which is why issues related to religions are so important.
Do Islam and Christianity have different origins?
No. Together with Judaism, they go back to the prophet and patriarch Abraham, and their three prophets are directly descended from his sons – Muhammad (PBUH) from the eldest, Ishmael, Moses and Jesus from Isaac (PBUT). Abraham established the settlement, which today is the city of Makkah, and vuilt the Ka’ba towards which all Muslims turn when they pray.
What is the Ka’ba?
The Ka’ba is the place of worship, which God commanded Abraham and Ishmael to build over four thousand years ago. The building was constructed of stone on what many believe was the original site of a sanctuary established by Adam. God commanded Abraham to summon all mankind to visit this place, and when pilgrims go there today they say: “at thy service, O Lord, in response to Abraham’s summons.”
Who is Muhammad?
Muhammad (PBUH) was born in Makkah in the year 570, at a time when Christianity was not yet fully established in Europe. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh raised him. As he grew up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes. The historians describe him as calm and meditative. Muhammad (PBUH) was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence of his society. It became his habit to meditate form time to time in the cave of Hira near the summit of Jabal al-Nur, the ‘Mountain of Light’ near Makkah.
How did he become a prophet and a messenger of God?
At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for twenty-three years, is known as the Qur’an. As soon as he began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth, which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate.
This event, the Hijra, ‘migration’, in which they left Makkah for the city of Madinah some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. After several years, the prophet (PBUH) and his followers were able to return to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively. Before the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) died at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far east as China.

"What or why religion?
Commonly the people of all ages and places understood or practiced religion in different ways and manners. Some identify the religion with their founders like Zoroast, Buddha and Christ. Some identify with the place of their origin like Judae or Hind. These religions are generally covered by the dictionary meaning of following different ways or forms of service to the supernatural or their gods.
Islam is the only religion that does not go by the name of its founder like Muhammad, Ibrahim or Adam nor does it identify with the place or origin like Arabia or else. The religion, Al-deen, according to Islam is the whole code of human life based on its relationship with its creator God and the creation of all things and beings. It is both objective and subjective mission of life, which includes physical, moral and spiritual rights and duties in every walk of human life. It guides and motivates man to do the good and avoid the evil in your actions and sayings be it personal, family or social life. It agrees with man’s nature and environment.
So man needs this code of life not to be confined in temple, church, synagogue or mosque but to be spread out in all your activities to establish a life of peace and tranquility.
Creator God?
We human beings inhabit the earth, which is only one of the nine planets in our solar system. There are many other solar systems in the whole universe. How many systems, planets and moons there are in the universe man does not know yet. He does not even know for certain when the time began or when will it end.
Can there be an end without a beginning or can there be an effect without a cause? Can the universe with men, animals, birds, minerals, vegetables, planets, stars, galaxies and other objects be running according to a faultless discipline and order without a controller or master? Can there be an army without a commander-in-chief or a school without a headmaster?
The ultimate source or power for all these things cannot be just a vacuum or accident. Even one accident needs a cause or source. This cause of all causes, the source of all sources, the power of all powers is nothing but the Sovereign. People call him by many names: God, Spirit, Nature, Jehovah, Bhagavan or Allah but He is one and Ultimate Allah only.
The name Allah is very accurate as it has not sex, plural or finity. Allah in Arabic and Aramaic stands for that one sovereign. He is one who created and caused everything that you see or feel around you be it animate or inanimate, dead or alive, big or small. Nothing is eternal or permanent excepting Him. We cannot see Him as He is infinite who has created also time and space but not controlled by it. He created everything around us for our use, not misuse, as He is loving and benevolent.
Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, declares the praises and glory of Allah. For He is the Exalted in might, the wise. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. It is He who gives life and death, and He has power over all things. He is the first and the last. The evident and the hidden, and He has full knowledge of all things.
He it is who created the heavens and the earth is six days then He established Himself on the one. He knows what enters within the earth and what comes forth out of it, what comes down from heaven and what mounts up to it. And He is with you where so ever ye maybe. And Allah sees well all that ye do. 57: 1 – 4.
Say: He is Allah, the one. Allah the eternal, Absolute, He begetteth not, nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him. 112: 1 – 4.
How / why man on earth?
Neither you nor me came into being on its own self. So the vast universe around us and the multiple creatures therein are, none but the creation of a prime creator, with a set discipline and nature for each. The ultimate one is Allah, the one Supreme cause. Man like any other things and beings in this universe is His creation. Man came from Him directly and not by sheer chance or evolution in this planet earth. He created man from one soul, male and female.
O Mankind! We created you from single (pair) of a male and a female, a female and made you unto nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (nor that you may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (He who is) the most Righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (will all things). 49:13
This coming to life is not without a purpose. It is not a creation in vain. He endowed Adam, the first man, with intelligence and volition. He was given a choice between right and wrong with accountability. The right path was to submit to His will and guidance and wrong path was disobedience. Allah also created Satan and raised to the jevel of angels but was cursed for disobedience. He also created angels who are in his submission all the time. T
he purpose of human life is not served by disobedience as was done once by Adam but in submission and asking for forgiveness. Adam prayed forgiveness but Satan only asked for respite. So the Sovereign object of this life is nothing but to worship the one creator, physically and spiritually. The Qur’an says: “I have only created jinns and men, that they may worship me 51:56; O ye people! Worship your Guardian lord, who created you and those who came before you that ye may become righteous. 2:21.
Why man needs guidance?
Man is not only mortal but also erring. His knowledge and power of judgment is also limited by time, space and experience. He does not control his own birth or death. He cannot see even what is behind the wall or his future. He is born with intelligence of free will so he is accountable for his own ways of life. The lucky ones benefit form knowledge and guidance but other group in darkness and misery.
Guidance may come from man or supernatural. Guidance from man of limited power or resources is bound to be limited and imperfect per se. only the guidance from the Sovereign eternal power is reliably and truthful. The Sovereign Lord guides man through His prophets and books for the benefit of the mankind. Man has to learn about these prophets and their message to know about the truth and the ways of practicing that truth. This is eternal divine guidance as against the guidance of mortal and erring man.
Prophets are mortal men but inspired by divine revelations sent to them by the immortal and unerring Divine Himself in different ages, places and people for the love of His creation. Books and prophets surely came for the people of Asia, Africa, Europe, America and others but they are mostly lost or corrupted in history of millions of years.
This guidance that came through the first man prophet Adam, continued through Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad (PBUH) and many more unknown prophets. But the message of guidance was complete and given final shape for the entire mankind in Muhammad (peace be upon him), the last prophet, in the last final and unchanged and unchangeable book, the Holy Qur’an.
“We have, without doubt, sent down the message; and we will assuredly guard it (from corruption). 15:9.

Generally worship means to follow the rituals of prayer, fasting, sacrifice etc. But true worship lies in practising the good and avoiding the evil according to the divine guidance. This is not confined in ritual prayers in house, temple, church, synagogue or mosque.
Religions trend to guide you to the path of good. But due to the loss of the original divine guidance sent down to each people by Allah through His messengers stays replaced by human guidance on own manipulation, replaced by human guidance on own manipulations, modifications and mutilations of their own destiny and free thinkers do not bother about a higher mission of mortal existence. Epicureans believe in animal habits of eat, drink and be merry.
But man, the mortal and rational being in confusion and frustration cannot escape his higher destiny of reaching the truth. The truth comes not from mortal man limited in time, space and intelligence but from the eternal sovereign through His books sent through His human messenger for the human good. Only the guidance of the Qur’an which remains unchanged and unchangeable complete in pristine purity as revealed to the last prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asks you to establish worship like other revealed books. And worship in this book of Islam is taught for your own good and to be establish in your prayer, education, work, leisure and every step of your life be you young or old, man or woman.
It is not righteous that ye turn your faces towards east or west. But it is righteous to believe in Allah and last day, and the angels, and the books and the messengers. To spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer. For those who ask, and for the ransom of salves. To be steadfast in prayer and give zakat, to fulfill the contracts which ye may have made. And to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing. 2:177.
What is Islam?
Islam is commonly known as the religion practiced by the Muslims. In fact Islam is the natural code of life as revealed by Allah to His messengers from the days of Adam down to the last of them Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was born in Makkah in 571G and died in Madinah in 634G. Islam is the first and the last religion of Allah on earth.
Islam is an Arabic word which means submission, obedience and peace. It is complete submission to the will of Allah, the one and only sovereign. Peace comes through the obedience to the code and conduct devised for human good in His revealed book, the Qur’an. Islam is the religion of peace and tranquility in this temporary would for a permanent world hereafter. Muhammad (peace be upon him), His servant and prophet was sent down to the earth only for 63 years with His messages completed in the Holy Qur’an and practiced in his life time known as traditions (sunnah). Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a prophet, a guide, a leader, a general, an administrator and a man of the family.
Not by birth alone buy by following His code of life one becomes a Muslim. Islam teaches man the one brotherhood of mankind irrespective of colour, cast, territory or wealth. When you see the Muslims in prayer, fasting, pilgrimage and doing good deeds you know that Islam is a blessing for the lost, misguided and have nots. By one’s own choice, for his own salvation.
Five Pillars of Islam
There are five obligatory pillars of Islam to become or remain a Muslim. These are: 1) Faith (Iman), 2) Prayer (Salah), 3) Poor Dueu (Zakah), 4) Fasting (Soum) and 5) Pilgrimage (Hajj).
There has to be a conscious awareness of these fundamentals of Islam followed up by their practice. Allah makes it easy for you to practice these one you firmly believe and understand them.
Faith
Faith begins with shahadah i.e. to bear witness that “there is none to worship other than Allah who has no partners and Muhammad (PBUH) is His servamt and prophet.” “Asshdu Allah la Elaaha Illallahu, Wa Ashhadu Ann Muhammadan Abduhu wa Rasuuluhu.”
a) It means to accept not by pronouncements alone but to firmly believe in heart in one Allah who is Supreme, Eternal, Infinite, Merciful, Creator and Provider. So He is the only one not dual, triple or multiple, who deserves to be obeyed and worshipped. This is Tawheed. He loves His creation so wants man to love His most.
b) It also means that Muhammad (pbuh) is the seal and last of the prophet of many of those that came before him. The Qur’an mentions only is of these prophets as examples but there are many unnamed ones. In all of them you must believes as Allah’s prophets who came only to guide man to the truth.
Besides these two basic ingredients of faith there are four more which we also must believe, they are:
c) The Books (Kutub) revealed to the prophets, the last being the Qur’an.
d) Angels (malaikah) – ever obedient beings.
e) Day of Judgment (Akhirah). The world hereafter.
f) The divine Decree (Qadar) – power of action from Allah.
Long before the revelation of the Qur’an to Muhammad (pbuh) the other books came to different people at different time but have been lost or corrupted by human beings. So the last boo came to the last prophet as complete, incorruptible, preserved and final one. Allah revealed to man through His prophets to guide man to the right path of truth. In the Qur’an a special reference is made to the scriptures of Araham. Books of Moses (Taorah), David (Zabur), Jesus (Injeel) and Muhammad (peace be upon him) (Quran).

UNDERSTANDING ISLAM - How to perform Ghusi (Total Bath)

Ghusi (Total bath)
Ghusi in Islam means the bathing of the entire body with water. Proof of the its legitimacy is embodied in the Holy Qur’an as follows: “…and if ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bath your whole body…” (Qur’an 5:6)
Occasions when Ghusi is required as an obligatory act
Ghulsi required as an act of obligatory the following cases:
1) After the discharge of semen as a result of stimulation whether awake or sleep (i.e. in a wet dream). The state is known in Arabic as ‘Junuz’. If, after the dream no wetness is found but without recalling any dream, performing Ghusi is obligatory.
2) After sexual intercourse (or the mere coming together of the two organs of a man and a woman, even through there may be no actual ejaculation) performing Ghusi is required.
3) Following a period of menstruation, a woman is required to perform Ghusi.
4) At the end of 40 days after child birth, a woman is required.
5) When a Muslim dies, Ghusi is required for him or her.
Occasions for which is preferred
1) Before undertaking Umrah or Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).
2) Before going to Jumah (Friday congregational prayer).
3) Upon washing a corpse. According to many scholars, the performance of Ghusi.
4) Before going to Eid prayer (Muslim annual feast prayers).
Essential requirements of Ghusi
There are two essential requirements, which need to be fulfilled for Ghusi to be valid. These are as follows:
1) Intention to perform Ghusi is necessary because it is the dividing line between acts performed as mere custom and deeds, which are reward able acts of worship. However, the intention is only by heart and need not to be uttered.
2) The entire body should be washed. Water should reach and flow freely over part of the body.
How Ghusi is performed
Besides the above two essential requirements, there are also other voluntary acts recommended for Ghusi. Both the essential and the voluntary acts are now integrated here below to demonstrate how the prophet (Pbuh) used to perform the Ghusi.
1) Intend by heart to perform Ghusi.
2) Wash both hands up to the wrists for three times.
3) Wash the sex organs properly.
4) Perform wudhu as usual (in the manner already discussed) except that the washing of the feet would be delayed until later when all the body is bathed.
5) Pour Water over the head three times, messaging the hair to allow water to rich roots.
6) Pour water liberally over the entire body, beginning with the right side and then, the left side ensuring that no part of the body is untouched by water such as the armpits, inside the earlobes, inside the navel, between the fingers and toes etc.
7) Finally, move a little further from where you were and ash your feet, beginning with your right foot and then the left.
NOTES:
1) A woman will perform Ghusi just as a man does, except that if she has plaited hair, she needs to throw three handfuls of water over her head.
a) The person may after completing the Ghusi recite the supplication for concluding Ghusi which should be recited outside the toilet or bathroom and which is the same as the one recited after completing wudhu.
Acts forbidden to performs who are required to perform Ghusi
Persons required to perform Ghusi are forbidden to undertaken certain acts. These are as follows:
1) Any types of prayer whether obligatory or voluntary
2) Tawaf
3) Touching or craying the Holy Qur’an. However, the prohibition does not apply to other books, which contain Quranic messahes such as commentaries of the Holy Qur’an or works of Islam jurisprudence.
4) Reciting the Holy Qur’an
5) Staying inside the mosque.
Menstruation (Haidh)
This refers to the periodically discharge of blood by women in their state of health and as easily distinguishable to women from post-childbirth bleeding.
Post-childbirth bleeding (Nifas)
Such bleeding usually occurs to women after childbirth and may continue without fixed duration, although in some cases, there may not occur bleeding at all.
Acts forbidden to women experiencing menstruation and post-childbirth bleeding
1) All acts mentioned hereinbefore, a forbidden to persons requiring Ghusi are also prohibited to women experiencing menstruation and post-childbirth bleeding.
2) A woman cannot engage in sexual intercourse. The companions of the prophet (Pbuh) asked him about this and Allah (SWT) revealed the following Quranic verse: “They ask thee concerning women’s courses. Say: They are a hurt and a pollution: So keep away from women in their courses, and do not approach them until they are clean…” (Qur’an 2:222)
However, all scholars are of the opinion that a husband may touch any part of his wife’s body above the navel and/or below the knees. This fact is based on the confirmation of prophet’s wives, that when the prophet (Pbuh) wished to be with them during their periods, they would put something over their private parts.
The concept of purification (Tahaarah)
Most surely Allah loves those who refrain from evil and keep themselves pure and clean – (Qur’an, 2:222).
Purification in Islam has a very broad meaning. This treatise shall deal with that kind of purification required prior to Salaah: cleansing of the body, garment and place of worship.
What is intention (Niyyah)?
In Islam, any good deed and for that matter any religious act is regarded as worship (ibaadah) and should be preceded by intention in order for it to be acceptable. To this, the prophet (Pbuh) is reported to have said, “every action is based on intention…” intention, therefore, is the aim and purpose of all deeds. It remains a condition of the heart and does not come from the tongue.
When you are to develop intention before doing any ibaadah, what is required is that you prepare all your mind and soul into a state of not being in greed for reward or fear of being punished, but for the love of what your Lord has enjoined you to do. You do the ibaadah as though you are seeing your Lord, and while you see Him not, yet truly He sees you.

- Muslim women observe hijab because Allah has told them to do so:
"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed...."(Qur'an 33:59)."
Hijab is an Act of Modesty: Modest clothing and hijab are precautions to avoid social violations. The following verses of the Qur'an highlight that this is not limited to women only.
"Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make far greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display theirbeauty except to their husbands..."Qur'an 24:30-31)
So, contrary to popular belief, Muslim and non-Muslim, hijab is not worn for men; to keep their illicit desires in check - that is their own responsibility, as the above verse and Prophetic sayings (hadith) show; "According to Jabir ibn Abdullah, when he asked the Prophet (pbuh), about a man's gaze falling inadvertently on a strange woman, the Prophet replied: "Turn your eyes away" (Muslim). In another tradition, the Prophet(pbuh) chided for looking again at a woman - he said: "the second glance is from Satan."
Rather, Muslim women wear it for God and their own selves.
When asked about stereotyping or generalizations about Islam and Muslims are replete in today's media, Muslim women in head scarves frequently unfairly stigmatised, even bans on wearing the hijab in some countries, regarded as oppressed, fanatics and fundamentalists; Aminah Assilmi, a Christian convert to Islam said: "To ask me to go out without my hijab would be like asking a nun to go topless. It amazes me, and I cannot help but wonder, if they would have ordered Mary, the mother of Jesus(pbuh) to uncover her hair"

- "WORSHIP: The definition goes something like this;
“Worship is an all inclusive term for all that God loves of external and internal sayings and actions of a person.” In other words, worship is everything one says or does for the pleasure of God. This of course, includes rituals as well as beliefs, social activities, and personal contributions to the welfare of society."
- "It is worth noting that even performing one’s duties is considered an act of worship. The Prophet told us that whatever one spends for his family is a type of charity. Kindness to the members of one’s family is an act of worship as is putting a piece of food lovingly in the mouth of one’s spouse, as the Prophet informed us. Not only this, but even the acts that we enjoy, when performed according to Divine instructions are considered acts of worship."
- Prayer is the first practical manifestation of Faith and also the foremost of the basic conditions for the success of the believers: “Successful indeed are the Believers, those who humble themselves in their prayers.” [Quran, 23:1-2] The Prophet (p) further emphasized:“Those who offer their prayer with great care and punctuality, will find it a light, a proof of their faith and cause for their salvation on the Day of Judgment.”
2. PRAYER IN ISLAM: WHY DON'T YOU PRAY?;

Everyday, five times a day, you are called to prayer: “Come to Prayer, Come to Success.” Prayer is our connection to Allah, and connection is Arabic is silah a word linguistically connected to salah: prayer. Those who are placed into hellfire will say regarding their situation: We were not among those who prayed."
- "The purpose of prayer is to strengthen your relationship with Allah Ta'ala; to be grateful for all His blessings; and to remind yourself of His Greatness. Just as the body requires physical needs, such as food and water, the soul requires spiritual needs, nourished by acts of worship, the most important of which is prayer. It could be that the body of a person is healthy but the person is spiritually dead.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The comparison of one who remembers Allah and one who does not, is like that of the living and the dead.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Allah Ta'ala says, “O you who believe! Respond to (the call of) Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.”Qur’an 8:24 "
