THE EU- GAMBIA 7.5 MILLION DOLLAR GEAP PROJECT, HAS GAMBIA BEEN RECEIVING CHICKEN CHANGE FROM THE EU?
by Abdoulie G. Dibba Published on Friday, 18 January 2013
The Gambia Emergency Agricultural Production Project (GEAPP), took off on 1 March 2010. The project was designed to improve access to agricultural inputs, equipment and post harvest capacity. It derived funding from the European Union Food Crisis Rapid Response Facility Trust Fund. The project received an allocation amounting to 7.5 Million dollars or more than 245 Million dalasis.
By 18 January 2012, the Project has distributed 60,000 bags of fertilizer, 525 tons of rice seeds, 300 power tillers, 367 Seeders, 367 Sine hoes and 367 rice threshers to 600 villages throughout the length and breadth of the Country. Apart from such farm inputs and implements, the project has also provided three seed multiplication centres with irrigation facilities in order to be able to produce seeds all the year round. The seed multiplication centres are located in Chamen village in the North Bank Region, Sapu in the Central River Region and Jaruba in the Upper River Region. The seed multiplication centres are supposed to produce seeds throughout the year and the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and the Ministry of Agriculture are to work together to ensure that seeds are available to farmers and are of good quality. The project has provided 36 milling machines to 10 districts in the country namely: Foni Bondali, Foni Kansala, Foni Bintang, Jarra West, Lower Saloum, Upper Saloum, Wuli West, Wuli East, Sandu, Niamina East and Niani. The project has also facilitated the distribution of five tractors drawing multi-crop threshers and 200 spreaders. The project conducted two training programmes for 300 power tiller operators as well as imported 300 sets of power tiller spare parts in preparation for future repairs in case of any breakdown. The project has built 23 Village Seed Stores in all the seven regions of the Gambia and they have trained 115 community members on seed store management and provided 1.2 tons of chemicals for the seed stores that can dress 50 tons of seeds. Editor's note When these developments were taking place many farmers thought that the money was from "Allah's World Bank." Now it is clear that the money was from the Trust Fund of the European Union in concert with the priorities of the World Bank. The economists of the world know 7.5 Million dollars is certainly not chicken change. Follow the developments as we trace EU funding of projects in the Gambia.
