Jammeh rejects European Union demands
The Point: Published on Wednesday, January 09, 2013

President Yahya Jammeh has sent out a clear message to the European Union and the outside world, declaring that he will never be blackmailed by a group with “chicken change” to accept what is not in the interest of the Gambian people.

President Jammeh, who was speaking yesterday during a cabinet meeting at State House, said Gambia “will never be colonized twice”.

His comments were in response to a 17-point set of demands by the European Union to be discussed with the Gambia government during a meeting slated for Friday 11th January 2013.

Among the demands by the European Union are the upholding of moratorium on the death penalty with immediate effect, revision of laws on freedom of expression and media regulations within 24 months, provision of information regarding the recent executions, including location of burial to the families.

“I will not compromise with evil, I will not compromise with anything that will question our independence as a country, and I will not compromise with any institution that thinks that we are not fit to rule our country, no matter what they have,” Jammeh declared.

Very understandable, seen as interference in "your" country's affairs by a group of other countries, but the other countries have big levers that they can use if they don't get their own way,the biggest of which is MONEY,grants loans, etc. which if you are a poor country is something that you need, lets see what happens over this latest development.
Never forget that the thinking of those from countries other than your own can be quite different.

Folks,

The rod is too hot for Jammeh. (LOL)

jammeh should swallow his pride and realize that the Gambia is a signatory to the EU.

http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/gambias-sovereignity-will-not-be-compromised-president-jammeh

[President Jammeh said The Gambia discovered oil before some African countries and others around the world, but vowed that he would not give them [the West] the natural resources with Gambia taking only 5% which, he said is the reason why The Gambia’s oil is not being exploited. “I made it very clear that the same Almighty Allah who gave it to us would give us the means to exploit it in our own. All what they are trying to do is to create a situation of instability so that they can get what they want or put up a puppet government that would succumb and give the wealth of this country to them, but by the grace of Almighty Allah all their machinations would fall on themselves, because that would not happen in this country,” he assured.]

Folks,

This one from the EU must have really gotten to Jammeh and his cabinet with the tone from him that is under the microscope. I am truly baffled the level to which jammeh's paranoia has carried him. Here is a man who won't take simple feedback and he is in self-denial? Look, this ***** with his bunch of crap needs to go to hell himself. Why is he so dumb and stupid? Oil my foot!!

Senegambia,

We have the countries of the world and these countries are signatories to certain treaties to make checks and balances in an effort to protect and promote healthy democracy and ensure rule of law. The Gambia signed the treaty as such like any other country that signed the treaty, they are required to be held accountable when they are not following such treaties. The Editorial by Foroyaa below breaks it down for you. Also, you can search for the Cotonou Agreement and it will give you more details.

Thanks,
Yero

http://foroyaa.gm/index.php/editorial/12159-collectively-responsible-has-the-government-digested-the-partnership-agreement

[It is the Gambia government which signed the Cotonou Agreement. Article 8 of the Agreement deals with political dialogue. It reads:

Political dialogue

1. The Parties shall regularly engage in a comprehensive, balanced and deep political dialogue leading to commitments on both sides.

2. The objective of this dialogue shall be to exchange information, to foster mutual understanding, and to facilitate the establishment of agreed priorities and shared agendas, in particular by recognising existing links between the different aspects of the relations between the Parties and the various areas of cooperation as laid down in this Agreement. The dialogue shall facilitate consultations between the Parties within international fora. The objectives of the dialogue shall also include preventing situations arising in which one Party might deem it necessary to have recourse to the consultation procedures envisaged in Articles 96 and 97.

3. The dialogue shall cover all the aims and objectives laid down in this Agreement as well as all questions of common, general, regional or sub regional interest. Through dialogue, the Parties shall contribute to peace, security and stability and promote a stable and democratic political environment. It shall encompass cooperation strategies as well as global and sectoral policies, including environment, gender, migration and questions related to the cultural heritage.

4. The dialogue shall focus, inter alia, on specific political issues of mutual concern or of general significance for the attainment of the objectives of this Agreement, such as the arms trade, excessive military expenditure, drugs and organised crime, or ethnic, religious or racial discrimination. The dialogue shall also encompass a regular assessment of the developments concerning the respect for human rights, democratic principles, the rule of law and good governance.

5. Broadly based policies to promote peace and to prevent, manage and resolve violent conflicts shall play a prominent role in this dialogue, as shall the need to take full account of the objective of peace and democratic stability in the definition of priority areas of cooperation.

6. The dialogue shall be conducted in a flexible manner. Dialogue shall be formal or informal according to the need, and conducted within and outside the institutional framework, including the ACP Group, the Joint parliamentary Assembly, in the appropriate format, and at the appropriate level including regional, sub-regional or national level.

6a. Where appropriate, and in order to prevent situations arising in which one Party might deem it necessary to have recourse to the consultation procedure foreseen in Article 96, dialogue covering the essential elements shall be systematic and formalised in accordance with the modalities set out in Annexe VII.

7. Regional and sub-regional organizations as well as representatives of civil society organisations shall be associated with this dialogue.

EU and ACP states should scrutinise each other's policies. The EU has raised its concerns. If the Gambia Government has issues it should also raise them. Taranga FM, Daily News and The Standard are closed down. If the Government does listen to Gambians the ban would have been lifted.]

Yero, take note: Gambia is a signatory to the Cotonou Agreement and not a signatory to EU. I guess this is what Senegambia is trying to bring to your attention.

Momodou,

Sure, point noted. It is easy to get confused with the many things around.

Thanks,

By Lamin B. Darboe
The Point: Published on Monday, January 14, 2013

Thousands of Gambians Friday marched in Banjul to show solidarity with President Yahya Jammeh for his stance against the 17-point demands by the European Union.

Marchers including men and women from all walks of life, marched from the Arch 22 to State House in Banjul, with banners saying “No to EU demands”, “We will never relent”, and “You can’t buy us Gambians”.

Alhagie Saihou Sanyang, on behalf of the marchers, presented to President Jammeh a declaration, which among others condemned the European Union for its demands.

"He said the Government should not have any qualms with that since it is for the benefit of the Gambian people. He opined that if the (EU) realizes that Gambia Government is not adhering to the provisions they have agreed upon, the (EU) is duty bound to remind the Gambia about the provisions of the agreement."

I am Yahya AJJ Jammeh born in 1965 in Kanilai, a few months after independence. That tells everybody that I didn’t want to be born under colonialism and I want to also tell you, the same Yahya AJJ Jammeh that risked his life as a Lieutenant in 1994 to liberate this country is the same Yahya Jammeh who is here to die for Africa and for The Gambia. If I was ready to die for Gambia when it was the most backward and dilapidated country before 1994, today after 18 years of progressive development, I am ready to die now for The Gambia.”]Daily Observer

Walahi, it is funny how Jammeh wants us to believe that he does have supernatural powers and controlled things in his mother's womb. I thought that is disbelief (bidah) in the highest order. Anytime that he opens his mouth, he help vindicate people on how empty and out of touch he is with realities. He is paranoid!! He is now moving to call Gambians cockroaches. It was the same that Ghadafi called his fellow countrymen before he finally met his horrible ending. Dictators just never learn a damn lesson, like the Quran says in al-Baqara, "deaf, dumb and blind".
