Can anyone tell me more details about Mali and how it differs from The Gambia?

In the Uk I have just heard small snippets of news about conflict in Mali. Is it within the country or coming from outside?

Last time i visited Gambia was 4 years ago now, when Gambia was peaceful Muslim country with little sign of any militants. Has that changed with time or is Gambia still very moderate?

Is it possible that the militants in Mali will spread to the rest of West Africa?

Vital to preserve Mali’s unity when tackling its political crisis, says UN envoy
13 November 2012 – A top United Nations official today stressed the need to preserve the unity of Mali, which has been divided since rebels took control of the north earlier this year, while at the same time tackling the country’s humanitarian and development needs.

“The first step is clearly to push for unity in the Malian Government,” the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, Romano Prodi, told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

“The existing divisions, the past divisions, the history that we had and the present difficult relations are certainly obstacles to preserving the unity and solidarity of the country,” he added. ...

Political, not military action needed in Mali, Algeria says

"adventure" that would never succeed, Algeria warned on Tuesday, urging a political solution to pave the way for isolating al Qaeda-linked rebels and organized crime networks.

Military experts from Africa, the United Nations and Europe have drafted plans to retake control of northern Mali, which fell to rebels in March after a coup in the capital Bamako created a power vacuum.

Algeria, which shares a 2,000 km (1,242 mile) border with Mali, fears a military offensive could push al Qaeda militants back into southern Algeria and could trigger a refugee crisis as displaced Malian Tuaregs would head north to Algeria.....

Mali: any military action should not worsen existing tensions, deputy UN chief tells meeting
19 October 2012 – The international community must help the Malian authorities put in place a credible political process that addresses the underlying causes of the country’s crisis and helps them with any military operations which may be needed to return parts of the country to Government control – while also ensuring that military action “does not exacerbate existing tensions or worsen an already fragile humanitarian situation.”
That was a key message of the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson, in his remarks today to an African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and UN Meeting of the Support and Follow-up Group on Mali, held in Bamako, in the West African country’s capital.
