I know that by now most of you must have heard of my appointment to higher judicial office in my country Nigeria. Many Gambians especially those in the legal profession have received this message with mixed emotions.
I have served the Gambian legal system in various capacities over the years and I have worked with many Gambian “legal luminaries” during this period. I know I am hated by many, begrudgingly tolerated by several and considered a necessary evil by the establishment to implement their agenda. A lot has been said about me and most of it has been speculative....
... Do you think that Nigerians, Ghanaians, Sierra Leoneans and or your neighbor Senegal will allow their country to be run by foreigners especially the legal and judicial system? There would have been uproar by civil society in the respective countries. It is therefore unfair to blame all your woes on me and my foreign judges. We have been hired to do a job and we have been doing our work with the backing, support and assistance of Gambians. It is only when some Gambians have fallen out of favour that they begin to criticize and condemn. You will be surprised to know the cards they had earlier played before they fell out of favour...
