Where did you hear that?
I am currently listening to the 7 am GRTS news on Tunein. There has been a training excersise at the military barracks in Yundum Monday and Tuesday where blank bullets have been used but the public has been informed several times in advance. |

Military exercise in a distance to cause public concern can be lot intimidating. Gambia has turned to full blown military dictatorship with worst police state outfit. Some day, these gun shots will wram up to something different. |

Old Yundum Residents Overwhelmed by Constant Gunfire
by Fabakary B. Ceesay
Foroyaa: Published on Friday, 28 September 2012
Information gathered by Foroyaa from the residents of Old Yundum, in the Kombo North District of West Coast Region,
speak of sporadic gunfire that frightens the people residing within and near the Yundum Army Barracks, the home of the Second Infantry Battalion. The concerned residents lament the sleepless nights endured from Monday 24 to Tuesday 25 September, respectively. The residents said most of them are panic stricken to the point of running away for safety.
According to the concerned residents that spoke to Foroyaa, they were awakened by the sound of gun shots coming from the direction of Yundum Barracks on Tuesday morning between the hours of 01:00hrs to 04:00hrs. They said the firing was so intense that even houses were shaking and those that were brave enough to come out could see bullets being fired in darkness. The Yundum inhabitants indicated that many could not bear the continuous firing to the point of trying to evacuate their families to a safer place.
The residents lamented their utmost surprise that the same incident happened the following morning within the same early hours as the previous night. They said they are very worried and do not know what was happening. A resident said, "I and my family were so panicky that I decided to transfer my children to another town for safety reason, because we could not understand the sporadic gun fire coming from the direction of the Army camp".
Another resident said: "I and my immediate family wanted to pack some things and run away to anywhere far from Yundum, because we could not bear the intense firing any longer."
The spokesperson of The Gambia Armed Forces {GAF}, Captain Lamin K. Sanyang said there is no need for panic and called on the Old Yundum residents to remain calm as the soldiers were only using blank ammunition. The GAF spokesman said the army has been embarking on a firing exercise which commenced from Monday to Tuesday. He said there was training that was taking place at the Fajara Barracks and they have moved to conduct a two night firing exercise at the Yundum Barracks. He said most of the time such training took place at the Brikama Nyambai Forest, but this time they decided to do the training at the Yundum barracks.
However, this reporter has monitored a Dakar based Senegalese Newspaper, "Rewmi", which published an article questioning whether there was an army mutiny in The Gambia. In the second page of their yesterday edition, the paper claimed that gunfires of {Kalashnikov] were heard around the Yundum Airport believed to be opposing the regime. According to them that was one of the reasons why President Jammeh did not attend the UN General Assembly currently taking place in New York, USA.
Another Senegalese online paper called Dakaractu.com says in their Wednesday edition that gunfire was heard in the nights of "Monday to Thursday".

It seems very few listen to GRTS radio which shows that people are not interested in the state media which is full of bias.
In the beginning of the last week, I listened to a public announcements about a military exercise going to happen at Yundum barracks. In the announcement the public was warned to go about their business as there will be no live ammunitions but blanks used. I suspect the Foroyaa reporter did not hear that public announcement.
Having the possibility to listen to live radios all over the world on a Smartphone through Tunein radio, I now have a habit of listening to the news on GRTS. Of course I enjoy the Kinkiliba show on Paradise Radio too whenever I can.

------------ CALLS INQUIRING ABOUT SHOOTINGS IN THE GAMBIA Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Friday, 28 September 2012
The information reaching Foroyaa from Senegal has it that media reports in Senegal convey that shooting has been taking place near the airport in The Gambia.
It is alleged that this is why the President did not attend the current UN Summit. Foroyaa contacted the statehouse to find out whether a Press Release has been issued to address developments in the Senegalese media regarding the creation of an armed opposition under the leadership of one Shiekh Sidia Bayo and the rumours of armed conflict. The Person in charge did not give the issues the honour of a response. Apparently, there was no sign of panic or unusual movement of security forces during the day. A Foroyaa reporter was sent to the area where the shootings are reported to have taken place.
Information gathered by Senior reporter Fabakary Ceesay from the residents of Old Yundum, in the Kombo North District of West Coast Region, speaks of sporadic gunfire that frightens the people residing within and near the Yundum Army Barracks, the home of the Second Infantry Battalion causing sleepless nights from Monday 24 to Tuesday 25 September, respectively.
"The spokesperson of The Gambia Armed Forces {GAF}, Captain Lamin K. He said most of the time such training took place at the Brikama Nyambai Forest, but this time they decided to do the training at the Yuindum barracks."
Foroyaa strongly urges the Government to start issuing statements to inform the public in advance before such training is conducted.

HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES OR JUST ROUTINE EXERCISE The Army Dispatch States That Military Exercise Continues
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Thursday, 04 October 2012
The heavy firing which took place on Monday 24 September and Tuesday 25 September, respectively was not preceded by any announcement from the army headquarters.
It was after our inquiry that we heard an announcement from the Army indicating that the firing is due to a military exercise at the Yundum Barracks and cautioning people not to be scared. On Tuesday 2 October Public announcement was again made that military exercises would take place at the Nyambai Forest range and life ammunition will be used. This makes people to wonder whether the events are just routine military exercises or heightened security measures. There is no doubt that even though the state is mute on the security situation in the country there is heightened military preparedness. What is however puzzling is complete void which followed SidiaBayo's announcement of his transitional council of 35 members and his threat to March to Kanilai within weeks. Foroyaa has been straining every nerve to find out serious reviews regarding who SidiaBayo is and his council members hut to no avail. We have not seen any Press Release from the council or interview from the leaders. We do not know what and what not to believe. Everybody is asking questions and no one is providing answers. Even the online Gambian media establishments are mute on the Council members and activities other than one Press Conference in Dakar. In Senegal the media reached out to speak to members of MFDC which gives the population an idea of the security situation. In The Gambia other than Foroyaa there is no attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding the armed opposition. No one knows its programme or membership. The result of having an intimidated media is complete darkness. Let the Taranga FM , The Daly News and The Standard GET GOING!
