Family laments ‘disappearance’ of Ba Kawsu Fofana
By Abdou Rahman Sallah

Friday, August 17, 2012

The family of renown Islamic scholar and imam Ba Kawsu Fofana has lamented what they said is the sudden disappearance into thin air of their much loved family head, after men in plain clothes reportedly came to effect an arrest on him Tuesday night.

Omar Fofana, brother to Ba Kawsu, told The Point in an interview that at the family residence in Sanchaba Sulay Jobe yesterday that, on Tuesday night between the hours of 9-11pm, officers of the National Intelligence Agency on board a double cabin pick-up vehicle visited the imam.

“Men in plainclothes came to the compound, while we were praying. They asked for Ba Kawsu and demanded to see him, while he was inside the mosque,” he revealed.

According to Omar Fofana, after completing his prayers, the officers met him and were heard talking to him, and even laughing inside the mosque.

However, after a few minutes, they told him that we came to collect him (Ba Kawsu) for questioning at the NIA headquarters.

“Bakawsu responded by telling them that he was performing special night prayers for 30 days, and would not want to miss it; and, besides the day was Lailatul Kadr (Night of Power). He pleaded with the officers for them to allow him to complete his task, and go for the questioning after the Koriteh feast,” Fofana narrated.

The officers, he said, insisted that they must go with Ba Kaswu and, after few minutes, Ba Kawsu accepted and asked them to allow him enter his room, after which he was nowhere to be seen.

Omar further told our reporter that a few minutes later, another team of NIA officers on board a tinted glass Pajero vehicle also arrived at the compound, demanding to see Ba Kawsu, announcing that they have a special message for him from the authorities.

“After waiting for sometime without seeing Ba Kawsu, the officers asked for me (Omar Fofana); then the wives of Ba Kawsu started to plead with them to leave me alone,” he said, adding that he told the women not to plead with the officers as they were carrying out an assignment.

“I was then handcuffed and put into the double-cabin, but as we moved towards Bakoteh, they dropped me on the way. They warned me to desist from interfering when my brother is being arrested,” Omar said.

Asked whether he has any contact with Ba Kawsu since his disappearance, Omar said, since then, he only communicated with him once, during which he (Ba Kawsu) promised to come out after finishing his special prayers after Koriteh.

“He (Ba Kawsu) told me that he has entrusted me with the responsibility of the family, until he comes back,” Omar further stated.

Daily Observer: Published on Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Sureties as well as family members of the controversial Islamic scholar, Ba Kawsu Fofana, have informed the Daily Observer that the renowned scholar is not in government custody, as it is being rumoured around town.

Speaking to this reporter yesterday at his home in Banjul Tobacco Road, Alhaji Sheikh Yakubu Sillah, Imam of Tobacco Road Mosque, who is also the Halifa General of the Mandinka Association-Gambia, said it is clear that Ba Kawsu is not in the custody of the government. He disclosed that yesterday [Monday] around 11:30am, Omar Fofana, Ba Kawsu’s brother called him to extend the scholar’s message that he is fine and that he had just completed his prayers.

If he is not in govt. custody, why are they speaking in the language of surities? Does that mean the Imam has escape custody or jumped bail? Something is fishy here.

I do not oppose unity but I oppose dumb union.

I was also puzzled about this recent case and the mentioning of sureties but I now understand that he was on bail from the last time he had been was arrested by the NIA.

A quote from the latest Foroyaa Article states: "Readers could recall that Imam Bakawsu Fofana was arrested on the 31 May 2012 by 2 plain clothes security officers in Brikama and detained at the Agency's headquarters for nine days incommunicado detention until Friday 8 June 2012 when he was given bail to the tune of 150,000 Dalasis and had been continually reporting at the agency's headquarters up to the beginning of the month of Ramadan when he was asked to stop reporting until after Ramadan.

Ousman Ceesay of Kerewan sounds and Imam Yankuba Sillah of Tobacco road in Banjul gave surety to the Imam. Omar Fofana added that he has got reliable information that the documents of the sureties were handed back to them by the NIA on the ground that everything was finished, meaning they have no case against him."

The return Of Foroyaa on line newspaper is very welcome and is continuing to answer confusing things that other papers seem not to clarify.

Imam Ba Kawsu Fofana not in The Gambia; Says Brother

By Alagi F. S. Sora.

Foroyaa: Published on Thursday, 06 September 2012

There are speculations and rumours regarding the whereabouts of Imam Ba Kawsu Fofana of Sanchaba Sulay Jobe who was paid a visit by the National Intelligence Agency on the Muslim Night of power at his Mosque in his compound in Sanchaba.

Some claimed that he was in the hands of the NIA, a claim which has been dismissed by the NIA authorities or he has fled the Gambia because of persecution.

This reporter spoke to the younger brother of Ba Kawsu Fofana, Omar Fofana, who explained the situation of his brother (Ba Kawsu). Omar told this reporter that Ba Kawsu finished his 40 day uninterrupted worship called "itifari" in Arabic on Thursday 30th August 2012.

He further explained that Imam Fofana left his home for Senegal on Thursday 30th August 2012 on the same day, adding that Ba Kawsu did not run away as some people may think. He confirmed that Ba Kawsu indeed left the country for the Casamance region in the Republic of Senegal. According to Mr. Omar Fofana, it is against the will of Ba Kawsu to leave his homeland for Senegal.

Meanwhile, Omar Fofana further stated that, "Let all the well wishers of Imam Ba Kawsu remain calm and know that Ba Kawsu is not under anybody's custody but is free.

He assured the general public that Imam Fofana is in Senegal and he is constantly communicating with the family each day.

Readers could recall that Imam Ba Kawsu Fofana was arrested on the 31st May 2012 and detained at the National Intelligence Agency headquarters in Banjul for 9 days without charge.

Furthermore, after his release on 8 June, Imam Fofana was continually reporting to the NIA headquarters in Banjul until the beginning of the holy month of "Ramadan" when he was reportedly asked to stop reporting until after Ramadan.

However, during the last ten days of the Ramadan, it was reported that personnelfrom the said agency came to his home at two different occasions. This is when he ceased to stay in his home until the recent information received that he has left the Gambia.

Friends I have just seen Imam Baa Kawsu and he is in good hands ; very good health and still the same man if not more determined to preach as he was doing before his nasty ordeal. I saw his finger which clearly showed signs of it being forced or broken in a way that it left a clear sign of him having suffered torture at the hands of those shameless thugs. It was a real pleasure meeting him and a sad experience seeing first hand the suffering of a simple preacher. Thank God he is safe now.My pleasure is based on his escape from the evil claws of the dictator .I was on a short vacation in Africa and hope to be back home soon .
