Firstly let me state I am uneducated in matters religious, I have been told that a Muslim man living in Gambia can marry up to 4 wives,if the first wife agrees and if you are able to provide equally for each wife. CONCORT used to post here but hasn't been posting recently,maybe if he is still reading Bantaba he may enlighten me.

Someone else will tell you that not only in Gambia is that applicable but done by permits of principles.
From known practice, no Muslim is obliged to marry more than one wife under normal circumstances. |

Yes that is true. But many men marry wives they can't provide for and of course these women have children. It is not uncommon for a man to have four wives and 20 plus children. I have met old men whose male children have gone on to repeat the pattern and they don't know the names of their grandchildren. It is very different to what is happening with the white population in the uk and other european countries where they are barely reproducing themselves. In this situation the children become little princes and princesses and are doted on, they are very precious. Likewise if you have only 1 or 2 grandchildren they will be much loved and adored!
Neither situation is very healthy. I think the middle line is the best option. Have children if you can afford to provide for them, but don't over indulge them.
Personally if women are educated, and have employment I wonder how many would choose to be in a polygamy situation. This is a situation that suits men, it also protects women that don't have a way to provide for themselves. For example, a widowed women may be married to her brother in law.
If women have free choice and are well cared for and provided for then it may work in a society without social security.
I do feel most women's natural instinct is for a monogamous marriage.

In the examples given and many others, there is NO OBLIGATION but choice and desire. Liken this to one wife and mistresses. Though they declare them husbands and wives, FAIRNESS is highly questionable. End of day, it is all about responsibility. How many people are responsible or sustain responsible behaviour?
Principle of No Compulsion still stands in the choice to marry one or more. Better informed persons can help explain this more. |

MAAFANTA INTERVIEW WITH Dr. Siga Fatima-Jagne Academic/International Consultant, A PROMINENT GAMBIAN LADY / WIFE WITH RELEVANT COMMENTS AND AS QUOTED BELOW;
quote: But others would consider it religious. For example, Islam allows men to marry up to four wives…
No, no, no… then it is people who don’t read the Qur’an and the Hadith very well who would say that, because the conditions for marrying more than one wife are so difficult to fulfill. Do you see people from Saudi Arabia marrying more than one wife? You hardly see Arabs marrying two wives because the conditions that are set are so difficult. I think very few in The Gambia would qualify to marry more than one wife. First, most women feed themselves. Most men cannot fulfill the main condition that Islam asks from them, which is to cloth and feed their wives and children. So why would they marry a second wife when they can’t even take care of the first one they have? That’s against Islam.
