She seems to be a late commer. "Sinkiri kuto" (the new cooking stove) had been introduced in the Gambia since early 80s. A project sponsored by DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency). Solar cookers have also been introduced in some communities.

Seems that Solar cookers are an obvious answer to cooking, Gambia has an abundance of sun and not many trees,most of which have been used for building and firewood and seldom replaced by those who have used them, this is left to those agencies who realise the danger of deforestation,soil erosion,and the rest of the problems that go with using wood without replacement,the users are probably unaware of future problems,its unfair to expect them to replace cut trees with a new tree, after all trees from nurseries cost money. |

The challenge with solar cookers is that you will not be able to cook when there is no sun. The sun is not out daily even in Gambia. However, they can definitely be used as a supplement to “Sinkiri kuto”. |

Toubab, don't you know that cooking still continues during rains? Firewood is sometimes kept under beds.  |
