It has been announced this evening that the President has removed CDS Masaneh Kinteh and transfered him to the foreign ministry a civilian. He is replaced by Ousman Badgie.
Very strange because just two days ago he was supposed to go on a nation wide tour. http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/cds-kinteh-begins-nationwide-tour
CDS Kinteh begins nationwide tour
Wednesday, July 04, 2012 The chief of Defence Staff(CDS) of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Tuesday began a tour of militarily installations around the country. The tour is meant for Lt General Masanneh Kinteh to acquaint himself with the working and living conditions of troops all over the country and also interact with them and their families to know their major constraints.
Speaking at a briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Banjul, the CDS acknowledged that a lot have been done for GAF in terms of infrastructural development, provision of vehicles and equipment over the past years. He said the tour will give him and other senior officers the opportunity to access the condition of those facilities and equipment and also look at the capability gaps that may still exist, and fill them as quickly as possible.
“Alongside our interactions with the troops, we will also take some time to meet the local communities and regional governors to give us feedback on the performance of our troops,” Lt General Masanneh disclosed. He remarked that GAF is close to the Gambian community and it is always important for them to know how they are performing their duties as far their areas of deployment is concerned.
He added: “All these put together would give us very good perspective as to the state of preparedness, readiness and the development of our troops. So the tour is important and a major tool to communicate with the troops on the ground. “I visit the troops twice every year to make sure that we know their problems; more importantly, to interact with them and know what their concerns are on the ground. We are going as a team and I want us to work as a team with one common focus, that is the welfare of the troops. It should be of paramount importance on what we do.” Author: Omar Wally

Badjie Takes Over Army as Kinteh Relieved
By Alieu Darboe
Monday, July 09, 2012
The Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, on Friday, July 6th relieved Lt. General Masaneh Kinteh of his services as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
On its Friday broadcast, the state-owned GRTS revealed that Kinteh has been assigned to the foreign service, and Major Gen. Ousman Badjie, who was his deputy for two years, replaced him.
The brief news release from State House, however, failed to state where and when would Lt Gen. Kinteh be deployed for his first diplomatic mission ever.
A native of Sankwia Village in Western Jarra, Lt. General Kinteh, who bags Masters degree in the United Kingdom, has a long, outstanding military career.
He was appointed head of the defence forces in October 2009, replacing jailed-Major General Lang TombongTamba, once a trusted ally of President Jammeh.
Tamba was dismissed in late 2009, and charged with treason shortly afterwards. He was convicted and condemned to death, alongside top army, police and intelligence officers.
Meanwhile, Kinteh’s deployment to the foreign service came as a surprise to many in the army, a military officer told The Daily News.
“It was just on Monday [July 2] that he began his biannual tour - assessing the conditions of his soldiers and military instillations,” our source said.
It could be recalled that three top army officers: Saikou Seckan, Lamin Bojang and Ebrima Bah were recently relieved and, like Kinteh, deployed to the foreign service, which now has a large proportion of former military officers.

Masanneh Kinteh goes to Cuba as deputy chief of Mission
By Author: Hatab Fadera Thursday, August 02, 2012
The immediate-past chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has been appointed deputy chief of Mission at the Gambia Embassy in Havana, Cuba, reliable sources informed the Daily Observer.
Masanneh Kinteh’s appointment came less than a month after he was relieved of his command responsibilities and discharged from GAF. He was then deployed to the Foreign Service.
After over two decades in the military, Kinteh, a seasoned officer with a wealth of command experience will now join other ex-military officers who were deployed before him to the Foreign Service. Among them are Yakuba Drammeh, former deputy chief of Defence Staff of GAF; and Sering Modou Njie, former officer commanding at State Guards, amongst others.
Though, a completely new responsibility, it is expected that Kinteh will meet up with the challenges of his new assignment, given his rich experience, having been at the helm of affairs of GAF for about three years.
Brief profile Born on 13th August 1968 in Sankwia village, Jarra West, Lower River Region, Masanneh Kinteh, prior to his enlistment into GAF had a brief spell in the teaching field [1988-1990].
His military career started in November 1990, after he attempted and passed the Commission Selection Board organised by the British Army Training Team for the selection of potential officer cadets. Having enlisted into the Gambia National Army on March 15th 1991, Kinteh, who rose through various ranks, was discharged from GAF on Friday, 6th July 2012. He assumed the mantle of leadership of GAF in 2009 and was relieved of his command responsibilities in July, 2012.
In addition to his huge achievements at the GAF, Kinteh had during his stint in the military pursued several courses in diverse areas. Among them are the United Nations peace-keeping, human rights and child protection and small arms and light weapons proliferation in Africa. He holds a diploma in national development from the Republic of Taiwan and a post-graduate diploma in public administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
Kinteh also pursued other civil courses in Namibia, Burkina Faso, France, United States of America, and the United Kingdom. He also pursued a degree course overseas, while serving as an officer of GAF. Meanwhile, efforts to get his up-to-date resume proved futile.
