Peters Expresses Concern Over Arbitary Arrests
By Alhagie Ceesay
Monday, June 11, 2012
The UDP administrative Secretary responsible for International relations, Mr Femi Peters, has expressed concerns over what he calls the ailing situations in the Gambia. He was speaking to the Daily News on Thursday the 7th June 2012, reacting to the rampant arbitrary arrest and detention of Gambian citizens in many case without charges. The vocal UDP administrative secretary said, as Gambian citizens, we are protected by the supreme laws of this country, whether young or old, weak or strong we are abide by the same laws and deserve the protection of the law. Today it is rather unfortunate that there is a very scaring situation in the Gambia. So scaring in the sense that the very people who should up hold the law are the very ones breaking the law.” The Gambia’s constitution is like a toy being played with, just like the way Christians violate the Ten Commandments. He further stated that it is pertinent to see our beloved country plunged into a situation that used to be so strange to Gambians and now arresting a person is like the royal ceremony. Mr Peters lamented that arbitrary arrests has taken its toll in this country which is so disheartening that even ordinary Gambians has undergone traumatic experiences which was an alien to this home soil. He stressed that as we all live in this country as law abiding citizens, instead of being protected by the laws, we are being utilized to harass and detain harmless and armless Gambians. He cited the plight of Ba Kawsu Fofana whose ordeal he described as sympathetic and condemned his arrest at its highest form. His 9 days detention without charges he said, is a violation of his rights since the 72 hours has already elapsed. “He cannot be detained beyond 72 hours without charge or taken before a court of law but these so call plain cloth security agents can arrest anyone and the person can disappeared for good,” he stressed. ” Who is safe in this country if our constitution is like a toy to be played with? He said, Gambian go to work with heavy hearts and come home with heavy hearted. There is a very scaring and pathetic situation and I don’t think this is the type of Gambia we want to live in, Mr Peters lamented. We the UDP do strongly believe that this is not the Gambia we bargain for. MrPeters quoted one attorney General whose name he said he would not disclose but said that this man paid a tribute to somebody and in his speech quoted the late John F. Kennedy’s words, former President of the USA who was quoted as saying;” We want a society where the strong are just, the weak secured and the peace preserved. “I don’t think one should look for a better society than this” , he said. I believe everybody will like a decent Gambia with the presence of these basic tenets of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. My party strongly believe that a better Gambia is possible, “he said.
