“CRR Alone Can Feed The Gambia,” Says Ganyie Touray
By Abdoulie Nget
Wednesday, June 06, 2012
For Ganyie Touray, the Governor of Central River Region, said that his region alone could feed the entire Gambian people, as they are blessed with vast land and fresh water, which farmers need most.
Governor Touray was speaking in an interview with the press at his town, Janjanbureh, during the first ever National Farmers’ Conference, which took place on the 29-30 May 2012 at CRR.
“CRR is the nucleus of farming activities in The Gambia, having the biggest land with water for rice farming. Among the farms in the area, you just need to clear, broadcast and then weed to have a good harvest due to fertile land but people in CRR are not using the land as expected,” he said.
The Governor, in firm words, said he has harvested 26 bags of rice just two months ago, adding that though the Government is doing its best, some farmers are still uncommitted, as they are always late on their farming activities, starting from clearing and weeding.
“The problems faced by farmers are all the same, but they should not complain of not being fully equipped, as they cannot be fully given what they want. The government is doing all it could by providing tractors and fertilizer,” he said.
Speaking on the conference, the governor said he was delighted with the organization, saying the government has been engaging in bottom-top approach, by listening to farmers across the country. In conclusion, he thanked FAO, WFP and Action Aid for the support they are rendering to the Agricultural Ministry as well as the farmers. For Binta Manneh, a farmer from Kerewan, said the government of The Gambia ,through the Agricultural Ministry, is now showing commitment to help the farmers.
“They are helping farmers but the problem is that they are late to provide the support needed by farmers. As we are speaking now, the seeds are not yet available for farmers and we all know the rains are just about to come,” she said.
She was not happy with some farmers for not being committed, saying in as much as the government is doing its best, the farmers also should stand up for the task.
Adding his voice as a farmer, Omar Nget, a livestock activist, in Mbappa Mariga Village, said the livestock of the country was facing some difficulties. He said livestock should be provided with a ministry instead of being under the Agricultural Ministry.
“We have done our research in neighboring countries like Senegal and realized that the farmers dealing in livestock are given credit to buy many animals, which in two years of care, will be sold for a huge amount of money. In the village where I am from, there are 700 cows but yet still, there is no borehole. I am appealing to the government to help,” he concluded.

I am sure he is sincere ,BUT is he able to deliver this fantastic transformation ? The answer to that is NO I am afraid. I did hear it rumoured that Indians have acquired or are working on acquiring large areas of land, upcountry for their own farms, anyone else aware of this rumour ?

There is a road construction going on from Kuntaur Fullakunda to Niani Kayai in CRD. I suspect it’s going to be an access road to their rice fields there but the authorities are tight-lipped to why the sudden road construction.
The Local government and lands minister Mr. Waa Juwara has recently denied reports of farmland deal to foreigners in the area. See: No land deal with Bangladesh - Lands Minister |

Reading your link Momodou,The Minister of Local Government and Lands, Hon. Lamin Waa Juwara, has missed ONE VERY IMPORTANT LAND AUTHORISATION a word which is common in dealing with use of land in The Gambia that is
"LEASEHOLD"
“As of now, Government have not sold or mortgaged any land to any individual or group of individuals, more so Bangladeshi in the Central River Region.”
How much more clear it would have been if the Hon Minister had more definite unambigious words . |
