US Jails Arms Smuggler with Reported Links to Gambia Friday, April 13, 2012
A US court on Saturday March 8, sentenced to 25 years a former Soviet military officer found guilty of arms smuggling. 44-year-old Viktor Bout’s weapons fuelled armed conflicts in some of the world’s most treacherous hot spots, including Rwanda, Angola and the Congo, US prosecutors say. He was allegedly looking for new arms deals in places such as Libya and Tanzania when he was arrested. Reports have it that Viktor Bout was a close ally to The Gambia’s president Yahya Jammeh’s former friend, late Baba Jobe, who was at the time assistant secretary at Office of the President. Both Bout and Baba were since June 2001 slapped with a UN travel ban. “While Baba Jobe was banged up in 2004 after falling out with President Jammeh, Viktor Bout continued to live large using different passports to elude authorities,” says PK Jarjue, a Gambian journalist based in UK. Viktor Bout, a former Soviet military officer and an international arms dealer, is nicknamed the ‘Merchant of Death.’ His colourful life inspired a Hollywood movie in contravention of UN Security Council resolution 1343, Journalist Jarju says.
