D86M housing estate handed over to gov’t
By Hatab Fadera Wednesday, March 28, 2012
The keys to the Sulayman Junkung Jammeh Housing Estate, constructed at the tune of D86 million in Kanilai by the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) were officially handed over to the Gambia government Tuesday at State House in Banjul.
The brief ceremony presided over by the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy marked the completion of the first phase of the project that includes two three-floor storey building with 18 rooms each; as well as 21 three-bedroom bungalows. The project, which took off in 2008 is in line with the government’s objective of meeting the housing needs of the citizens.
Speaking on behalf of the president at the occasion, the vice president seized the opportunity to thank the SSHFC for providing the required services to Gambians. She underscored that the institution was set up by the government to provide social security and housing for Gambians at a reasonable cost.
“We want to thank you for that because today we cannot talk about a city-state that the president envisioned in 2020 without really appreciating the efforts of the SSFHC. His Excellency has done a lot to make other things happen – the infrastructural development, the roads and even the support he is giving the SSFHC,” she stated.
VP Njie-Saidy also touched on the decentralisation efforts of the SSHFC, saying: “We know that today you have banked a lot of lands; in some places because of the land tenure system it took you a long time before you are able to acquire a land.”
To this end, she reiterated their commitment to help in actualising the vision of the president in the attempt to transform The Gambia into a city-state. She said this “can happen” stressing that it only takes commitment and more efforts to achieve it.
“We want to thank you for the phase one of the Sulayman Junkung Housing Estate and we are looking forward to phase two or three possibly. We want to see really The Gambia move to a city-state,” VP Njie-Saidy concluded.
“We are here to hand over the phase one of the Sulayman Junkung Jammeh Housing Estate of the Kanilai Housing Project. We are here to hand over two completed storey buildings of 18 apartments each and 21 three-bedroom bungalows which constitute the phase one of the project,” the deputy managing director of the SSHFC, Saibatou Faal said while handing over the keys to the vice president.
He expressed delight to be associated with the handing over ceremony, while recalling that when this project was conceived, the idea was for SSHFC to go ahead with the development that will be reimbursed later. Faal also expressed their delight at fulfilling their work.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the Law Reform Commission at the Ministry of Justice, Henry Carrol, said the project is highly commendable in view of the fact that it will go a long way in providing shelter for most underprivileged Gambians, thus making accommodation more accessible.
The permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence, Harry Sambou, who chaired the occasion also hailed the project.
