This confirms the above posting from yesterday.
Violence mars Niani APRC candidate selection:- 4 arrested, to appear in court today
By Daily Observer Thursday, March 01, 2012
The selection of the APRC Niani Constituency candidate for the upcoming National Assembly Election held onTuesday ended in violence, as protesters set fire on the Wassu Community Centre where the selection process took place.
Reliable sources revealed to the Daily Observer that four people have been arrested by the police and are currently detained at the Wassu Police Station. They are expected to appear in court today, Thursday, March 1st, 2012. The incident came following the selection of Hon. Ebrima Manneh, the incumbent National Assembly member, over one Alhaji Sillah, to contest for the March 8th Assembly polls, which did not go down well with the latter’s supporters.
According to reports, the committee that was appointed by the party chairman and president of the Republic on the 2nd January 2003 comprised of the following people: Alhaji Malick Njoke Secka-chairman, Alhaji Jaranke Konteh-vice chairman, Malang Camara-secretary, Demba Saidy-assistant secretary, Toma Jaiteh-treasurer, and Mod Kah-mobiliser. Other members of the committee include Batch Jawo, JJ Kanteh, Abdou Boye, Ali Gaye and Fatou Bintou Jobe.
When contacted to verify the story, the governor of CRR, Alhaji Ganyie Touray, said the allegations made by the protesters are not true. According to him, there was a time when Yankuba Touray (then APRC National mobiliser) went round to meet the APRC Constituency Committees across the country. He said during that tour, it was decided that the committees have to be changed.
He also disclosed that after that the president of the Republic declared that he was going to maintain the old executive committee structures that have been in existence since 2003 and they would not be changed. According to Touray, the president further said that if anyone among the executive committee dies or is no longer residing in the district, then they can fill his/her position.
Governor Touray also added that about two or three members of the Niani Constituency APRC committee have died and were replaced by the people concerned. “Before the selection started on Tuesday at the Community Centre in Wassu, I read out all the names of the committee members and I said if there is anybody that is part of the committee and his/her name is not called, then let me know before the selection begins and everyone agreed.
The committee then selected Ebrima Manneh based on strong and genuine reasons to retain his candidature for the APRC in the constituency. When the selection was done, one of Alhagie Sillah’s supporters said ‘you people have made your selection but you will find the people outside’. To my surprise, they set fire around the building where we made the selection and everybody ran away except me and a few others.
This means they had planned this act before coming,” Governor Touray explained. He then confirmed the arrest of the four suspects saying they are currently detained at the Wassu Police Station and are expected to appear in court today.

From reading the above nothing at all is clear and I think that the people there are so overcome by the fact that all eyes are on them they are very confused about what actually took place, when the men appear in court after a brief rest, (hopefully ), at a "mini hotel" we may well learn more about the reason for what they are alleged to have done. |
