Part of the remit of Gambian Tourist Authority is this and I quote
Marketing: The sort of tourists that that the country attracts is to a large degree influenced by the way in which the country develops and showcases the Smiling Coast as a tourism destination. Therefore the authority's main marketing aim is to target high spending, up-market tourists while using the motto "Your Haven in Africa"
These are the lattested figures I can find If anyone can update please do so In 2005 the total stock of hotel beds in Gambia stood at 7,000 with 3,000 rooms This does not take in to account other types of establishments or private room lets There are very few high class hotels in Gambia Most tourists now come on mass-booked, cheap package holidays
So where are these high rollers? And why have they failed to come or why has GTA failed to attract this main core type of tourist??
