People & Power : Pirate Fishing People & Power takes to the seas off Sierra Leone to investigate the multi-million dollar illegal fishing trade. The precious marine resources of some of the world's poorest people are being targeted by industrial-scale pirate fishing operations, to feed the seafood hungry markets of Europe and Asia.
The problem is particularly acute in West African waters where fish is a vital - and often the only - protein source for millions of people.
In a special two-part investigation, People & Power sets out to identify and expose some of those involved in the multi-million dollar trade and to look in particular at its consequences for the impoverished West African nation of Sierra Leone.

Very serious, read the full story in Momodous link it is comprehensive (Videos too) the team have done a very good job,as usual, it's about MONEY,one quote is "the trade is flourishing because of rampant local corruption, in which officials are paid to turn a blind eye to the activities of foreign trawlers" Exactly what are the people doing getting rich instead of dealing with a problem that affects the lives of their people,? it's not an "I didn't know" thing its about total individual GREED, and lack of caring for others.Shameful. |

There are many illigal floating fish factories along the coast that have no contact with the countries along Westen Africa. Who knows how much South Korean companies such as Dongwon Industries Company Limited with over 40 vessels most of which are factories, fishing vessels and others classified as fish cariers mostly found between South Africa, Mauratania and Spain are earning from the this illigal fishing? |

I watched a BBC 2 programme last night about a fisherman from the UK going to Sierra Leone to find out about how fishermen make a living there. It highlighted the danger of them going to sea in their little dug out canoes and how hard they had to work to find any fish.
The impact of the trawlers on the lives of the local people was shown very clearly. The trawlers grab the majority of the fish, leaving the local fishermen struggling to find enough food for their families to eat. For them, it is not about money and getting rich, it is about survival.
The West African governments need to stand up to these countries plundering their fish stocks instead of inviting them in for short term gains.

No doubt about that but with corruption in MOST of the countries and very limited Navy capabilities ,I don't really see how they can achieve anything.
