http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/the-essence-of-births-deaths-registrations

This is a good reminder,BUT,it would be very useful to know:

Are issued certificates designed so as to prevent forgery and individually numbered ?

Are registers kept?

Are duplicate certificates available,in case of loss, damage, requirements of banks, insurance co. etc. ?

Where are the registers (if any ) deposited ,are they safe from fire, flood, theft, loss.?

SOMETIMES it appears that official Gambian documentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Any Answers from bantaba readers ?

No answers then !
KOBO with your job as the self appointed indexing master of bantaba in cyberspace and experience of digging out obscure documents that most of would not know where to look ,such as you have done in the recent ferry problems topic, how about having a go at this one ? as no one else appears to know or even been able to post comments despite being read by many tens people to date.

Another important topic that deserves answers falls by the wayside and is blown away and covered by the sands of time, forgotten.

Too difficult to sort out I suppose, but its not a first priority and there are more important things to deal with, poor harvest for instance,I do hope that an in depth look at this undoubtedly confused situation and record keeping (what records ?) is noted under things to do .

Toubab,
I think the government should now be proactive and start to take the registration of births in the country seriously, by passing a law that should make it mandatory for all births to be registered immediately after a child is born by the hospital or health facility where the child is born.

The burden of registration should be placed on the hospital or health facility where the child is born. There should be a specialized office linked to the registration of births where copies of a birth certificate should be issued.

In cases where a child is born outside these settings, a hospital or health facility, the parents of the child upon seeking post natal care in a hospital or health facility, should be required to have the hospital or health facility register the child. In this way there would be a firm assurance that all births in the country are registered.

Previously, I think there is a master register at the ministry of health where registration of births are recorded. If you need a certificate of birth then they would copy the details from this master register. I could be wrong but this is how i remember it, and this could present some problems as I come to find out recently.

Someone I know needed a birth certificate for his 27 years old son. They issued a copy of the birth certificate from the Gambia, however,
the lawyer who was looking at the document found out that the birth was recorded in 2007, whilst the same document indicated that the child was born in 1985. He could not believe that the document was authentic, because the disparity between the time the child was born and the time the birth was recorded was too much. He advised that another document to substantiate the time of birth should be provided.

In the West this would be considered quite abnormal, but I guess in the Gambia and in other West African countries this is normal and is the norm. I wanted to believe that 2007 was the date the certificate was extracted from the master registry, but it indicated in the certificate itself that the birth was recorded in 2007. Having hospitals and health facilities register births in the Gambia would be quite helpful and beneficial.

Also, regarding the Foroyaa issue concerning the statelessness of most people born in the Gambia, I cannot understand since they start raising this issue that nobody is taking it seriously. This should have been a burning national issue that would have led to some resolution.

sankalanka ,you have personal experience of confusion that can occour with Gambian paperwork, the whole system wants revamping as it is "not fit for purpose" that's a phrase that is quite often used in the UK for departments overseen by the government that are basically broken, and it is not until "the wheel comes off" meaning someone has made a big error and caused lots of trouble to someone who needed to use the department that broken systems are put right.Your hospital idea is good and should be taken into account when the powers that be have the time to deal with this.
My suggestion that a financial prize be given to the school or community group who come up with the best workable idea for Gambian Births and Deaths registration and historical record keeping.
