"How does someone get out of poverty if they have no education and no skills? And there are no jobs? You make it sound so simple. If sitting and drinking tea is a way of escaping then so what? But you can't seriously believe that the majority are content to be poor, want to have no work, want to hustle toursits or indeed want to marry a white woman"

"if they have no education and no skills? "

Lily, that's a cop out, sorry, dig holes, sweep roads, collect litter, you need skills and education for those type of jobs ,wash cars, rubbish clearing etc etc.?

"If sitting and drinking tea is a way of of escaping then so what?"
Lily, that's a waste of time if you spend all your day doing it.

"want to hustle toursits or indeed want to marry a white woman"

I believe that MANY Gambian Men are growing up believing that they CANNOT get a job so why try, this leads to an acceptance of their circumstances, yes, poverty, because they know nothing else, so this is life.
Lily, you must know that white people visiting Gambia are seen by MANY average Gambians as money on legs and are treated as a big fish to be caught and reeled in to solve all their problems with YOUR money,do you believe that that is a basis for a good life, or a good marriage ?

"You make it sound as if everyone you meet (here and in The Gambia) is somehow a scrounger and after your money. Not my experience at all!"

Lily, you must have been very sheltered in your visits to Gambia, and know only some very lovely people in the UK
Sorry Lily, we appear to be poles apart in our thinking and that's not going to change is it ?

Clearly not Toubab.

And no - my time spent in Gambia is not sheltered, far from it.

And digging holes, clearing rubbish does not feed families.

Clearly no point in this conversation.

Do you even like Gambia and Gambians?

I DARE NOT INSULT OR USE ANY VULGAR LANGUAGE TO ANYONE HERE; FOR I LOVE THIS FORA AND EVERY COMMUNITY MEMBER; AS VERY MATURE MEMBER THROUGH OUR EXCHANGES OVER TIME

NEVER WILL I FALL IN DISGRACE HERE FOR AM CONSIDERATE TO OTHERS. THOSE DAYS ARE GONE WHEN PROFANITY PREVAIL HERE!

LOVE YOU ALL AND REGARDS TO EVERYONE; FRIENDLY OR FOE!

KOBO, I took your comment as I think you intended ,as humour,it is probably accurate in my case anyway
I think that Lily thought that you and I were ganging up on him/her as he/she feels that I was too hard on the average Gambian man who sits around for most of the day drinking attaya and chatting, that is my view, his/her view is somewhat different,no offence taken by me to anyone.
Words can mean different things to different people and cause confusion, this is what politicians rely on when hoping people will vote for them

Gambia's health welfare is under threat as president claims cure for every illness. The only people that will not try his concoction are members of his family and of course the big man himself. He will prefer Western treatment.

In response Toubab1020, nothing will change in terms of qualitative improvement.

Let's wait and see.
H.E. was supposed to have cancer and that was why he went to US and stayed for a week, that story now appears to have died a death ,perhaps H.E. will get treated at RVH after the new man has finished, you just don't know.

Story of the mystery US visitor is not dead. Traces of him visiting a specialised unit in one US hospital came up recently.
