History always repeats itself but with a difference.

Hello kobo thanks.
It’s been a while since I made any worthy contributions here but be rest assured, I have read all your postings here. Your trade mark is here for all to see; the ever presence of Che as your profile punctuated by the rainbow colors of your postings. I could always tell which postings are Kobo’s. If anyone has been consistent here on Bantaba, it is you. Your avatar has always remained the same as far as I could tap into my aging brain.
Today is an important day in the life our country. It’s a day that comes every five years and therefore a day that many are witnessing today will not the next time round. I am reminded by the likes of Edward Francis Small trudging the streets of Bathurst with his banner “ No Taxation without Representation”. Those days are a far cry from what we are witnessing today. Late Mr. Small was fighting an imperial power and was asking for basic fundamental rights of every person; that is the right to influence their destiny especially from a power that was never invited to our land in the first place.
When we had “independence” in 1970, a nation was reborn, a new energy was released and for many that witness that history unfolding In real time, will agree with me that there was a lot of jubilation because we had hoped that the future was more promising than the 150 years of colonial rule. Gambia today can once again renew the hopes of this generation by guaranteeing the rights of its citizens to influence their destiny. The world is watching and history is recording how we handle this process. We can decide to be a beacon of hope once more as we did in 1817, when we were the only land where freed slaves were granted asylum in British colonial West Africa.
We can also take solace from the fact that Gambia also provided land for refueling of allied planes in their campaign in North Africa under the leadership of late Montgomery. We have never been pawns in the defense of human rights. We have always defended the weak and stood on the side of justice. There are many examples to mention here. The subject matter of my posting can only happen if we as a people, deal with this electoral process with open minds, sincerity, honesty and above all, see and understand that Gambia is bigger than anyone of us; and therefore, when the interest of Gambia is at stake, that we are willing to give up our individual desires and aspirations and “remain ever true to our motherland”
Anything short of this, history will have judged us a people who have failed where we could and when we stand before the God of history, He will say “I was hungry, and you fed Me not”.
Let’s ensure this train is truly bound for glory. We can do it. The difference between possible and impossible is a measure of your willingness.
