BREAKING NEWS: ECOWAS has just announced that it will not send any observers to the Gambia for tomorrow's presidential election. The commission says “preparations and political environment for the said election are adjudged by the Commission not to be conducive for the conduct of free, fair and transparent polls”. It cites “intimidation, an unacceptable level of control of the electronic media by ...the party in power, the lack of neutrality of state and parastatal institutions, and an opposition and electorate cowed by repression and intimidation”. It says the electoral climate does not meet the minimum standards set under the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance for the conduct of elections. See More

Notwithstanding the flaws, the UDP is determined to win and form the next government. All we need is legitimacy. So please call your people and tell them to vote Darboe and the UDP led alliance as it is the votes that we need to secure victory for the Gambian people and to deliver development with dignity.

Thanks

I do not oppose unity but I oppose dumb union.

HUNGRY FOR POWER IS NOT A STRATEGY! THIS ELECTIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN BOYCOTTED SINCE VOTER REGISTRATION AND COMPLETELY A MOCKERY TO GAMBIAN DIGNITY, POLITICAL LEADERS AND OUR DEMOCRACY; SUPPOSED TO BE CHERISHED?

WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHY "BOY-COT"IS NOT IN AGENDA FOR OPPOSITION; ESPECIALLY RISKED AGAIN BY UDP WITH ITS AGEING LEADER

UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE CERTAIN CREDIBLE POLITICIANS BUT TERRAIN IS NOT "LEVEL" AND HOSTILE

Unfortunately, ECOWAS is a toothless bull dog that can't hold a single government accountable...

Why did they wait until a day before the elections and announce they are pulling out?

Were they ever in fact interested in addressing the problems?.

Did they consult with the IEC and legitimately address their concerns?

How would it reflect on them if the AU, EU and Commonwealth and other groups in fact monitor the elections?

Where is the credibility of this body after all the violations?

What we needed from them was to monitor and document every unfair tactic so if the elections are desputed there can be ample evidence to make a case...

I think they have bailed out on the Gambian people as they have done all these years despite what is been happening in the Gambia?

It is simply a loss opportunity to stand with the Gambian people!!!!

dbaldeh,I believe that ECOWAS as an inter-governmental organization of which Gambia is a member therefore will not make such a statement without consultation with government and IEC. UN, EU and other aid agencies refuse to fun the elections because of this principle.
Its my view that ECOWAS should be commended for having the guts to come out in the open and say what many institutions have said in private. Our brothers in ECOWAS deserve a pat on the back for standing up with Gambian people at this difficult moment. There are inherent structural reasons why coming with an early statement could damage the current process as you know non of the opposition parties is complaining to the point of boycotting.

Considering how much efforts and commitment ECOWAS demonstrated in the cases of Gambian journalists Chief Ebrima Manneh (disappeared) and Musa Saidykhan (tortured) there is so much Gambians have to respect this august body. ECOWAS has been in the battle front with the crooked Jammeh regime too long. As someone of the media front yourself Baldeh, it will be more encouraging for you to stand with ECOWAS by recognising their good work for Gambia.
