UNITED TO LOSE THE ELECTIONS- NO, WE CAN’T
by Abdou Secka
To any independent political observer, abandoning the NRP to stand as Independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections is a political suicide that Hamat Bah would live to regret. In politics, an independent candidate is an individual NOT affiliated with any political party. To use a convention to elect an independent presidential candidate is wasteful and politically insupportable. Mr. Bah has obviously fallen into the intellectual trickery of Mr. Halifa Sallah especially when it now emerged that his decision not to contest for the leadership of the United Front was consequential to the holding of the convention.....

1. Under The Constitution a united front can only work through national unity coalition/alliance, under one umbrella, one flag bearer and common political platform, impossible rallying and mobilising under "party- led" or subjecting it to any coalition/alliance partner party name? The catch is there is no room for "cross-carpet" to another party but there are provisions for "Merger of political parties" under a common political platform; and UDP PARTY-LED position does not qualify to be considered a common political platform uniting UDP under a united front with other opposition parties? Who dares to proof me wrong, welcome please
2. Hamat Bah's bid for Presidency whether under a political party name or without a political party name, serves the common political platform for the united front; in line with the Constitution under "merger of political parties"
3. Each of those opposition parties concerned, colluded and agree on solid national unity terms for a united front, signed a Pact & MOU to be under one umbrella for a common goal, a common political platform and with one flag bearer/President candidate to represent them. Technically they "merged" and considered "merger of political parties" under the Constitution. As its a transitional period there are restrictions and/or compliance to be under one political platform and Hamat Bah made the supreme sacrifice of resigning leadership of already registered NRP compelled by those restrictions of Electoral laws/The Constitution in order to serve the united front; in national interest
4. NADD registration is a good precedent. It protected Sedia Jatta to maintained his seat up till now having won it under NADD political platform when PDOIS faltered into NADD; whilst Hamat Bah NRP lost a supreme court case.
5. WE MAY RECALLED THE ISSUES INCLUDED; FAILURE OF NADD, "MERGER", LEADERSHIP, COMMON GROUND, COMMON POLITICAL PLATFORM, REGISTRATION OF UNITED FRONT/COALITION/ALLIANCE TO SERVE AS AN INDEPENDENT PARTY FROM REGISTERED PARTIES OF ITS PARTNERS, SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL PARTY CANDIDATES FOR THE COMMON PARTY PLATFORM, BANNER, MOU & PACT, AMONGST OTHERS? NOTE THESE STATEMENTS FROM LATEST UDP LEADER TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLICATIONS AND MATTERS ARISING FROM MOBILISING A UNITED FRONT;
"“I cautioned against the formation of another political entity because individuals can come together to form a party, but registered political parties cannot form a political entity,” he said."
"“I suggested that the party that has the larger support should infact provide the candidate. When it comes to parliamentary, we look at the strength of various parties in various constituencies and support the party with bigger support in a particular constituency.”
"He went on: “In the Jarra West bye-election there was suggestion for independent candidate, but I said my party will not support a candidate on an independent ticket. After all, that is a UDP stronghold. We ended up fielding in a UDP candidate and he won."
"“That was the state of affairs until in April 2005 after signing MoU for the establishment of NADD; some insisted that NADD must be registered. I told them if you do, you will run into some constitutional problems because an individual cannot belong to two parties. The result of the registration, we all know,” Darboe explained."
5. After those comments from UDP leader under 4. above, The Daily Observer made these remarks;
""Of course, the results was catastrophic as UDP and NRP unceremoniously quit NADD and joined forces, leaving smaller parties such as PDOIS, PPP and NDAM after Darboe’s bid for a party led alliance did not have the support of others, save NRP."
6. Still lingering questions and cloudy issues under 5. above; - Why UDP and NRP "unceremoniously quit"? We have heard allegations of Bad MOU and PACT alleged to be an OAT, Leadership struggles, Registration of NADD and Constitutional matters, and Party manifestos without provisions for "Merger"; amongst others
- Terms for the UDP/NRP Alliance and unceremonious break-up still unknown?
7. HAMAT BAH RESIGNING FROM NRP (PARTISAN CAUSE) FOR LEADERSHIP/FLAG BEARER OF A UNITED NATIONAL FRONT (IN SPIRIT OF NATIONAL UNITY AND FOR NATIONAL CAUSE) REQUIRES ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, DECISIVE LEADERSHIP, DYNAMISM FOR NATIONAL DUTY
8. WHETHER "UNITED TO LOSE THE ELECTIONS" IT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND UNDEMOCRATIC TO SIDE-LINE OTHER REGISTERED OPPOSITION PARTIES NOT TO CONTEST THE GENERAL ELECTIONS, DIS-ENFRANCHISED CITIZENS, HIGH-JACK GAMBIAN DEMOCRACY AND MULTI-PARTY SYSTEM; THROUGH COERCIVE ACTIONS FROM ANY PARTY
9. FINALLY ADVOCATING FOR NATIONAL UNITY COALITION IN SPIRIT OF COMPATRIOTS, PARTNERSHIP AND SOLIDARITY SAVED FOR 2011, IS FAR BETTER THAN THOSE DISINGENUOUS CENTRIFUGAL FORCES ADVOCATING FOR PARTISAN AGENDA OR ANY SORT OF "PARTY-LED COALITION/ALLIANCE AND AWKWARD STRATEGY TO IMPOSE A UDP GOVERNMENT; AT THE CRITICAL TIMES TO SALVAGE THE COUNTRY THROUGH UNITED NATIONAL FRONT OR NATIONAL UNITY COALITION/ALLIANCE WHICH CANNOT BE UNDERMINED BY ANY PARTISAN INTERESTS/CAUSE/AGENDA |

AS ALL OPPONENTS APPEAR TO HAVE LOST 2011 ELECTIONS PLOT AGAINST PRESIDENT JAMMEH/APRC, THESE WERE INTERESTING FAIR AND BALANCED COMMENTS AHEAD OF FAILED TALKS FROM RELATED BANATABA TOPIC;
"Reported Hamat Bah addressed some 30,000 cheering supporters in Bundung Bo-hoe in Serrekunda ahead of the official campaign launch on Saturday. Bah is being supported in the election by the Gambia People’s Democratic Party (GPDP), National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD), National Reconciliation Party (NRP) and People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS).
