DAILY NEWS Division Looms Over Tobaski

"Friday, November 04, 2011

On the countdown to the Muslim merry-making feast of Tobaski, the festive atmosphere has already registered itself.

The hustle and bustle in the crowded markets as people go about their shopping sprees for new clothing to put on during celebrations characterised by visits to friends, and families, and preparing sumptuous dishes from the rams being bought by households, are all too evident.

However, a division that is becoming all too familiar within The Gambian Muslim community is looming over the celebrations.
According to The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC), Tobaski will be observed in on Sunday Nov. 6.

The country’s umbrella Islamic religious body, according to news aired over the state-owned media, has received information from the Kingdom Saudi Arabia that Sunday Nov. 6 will mark the tenth of Muslim month of Zul Hijah – thus Tobaski.

But some communities in The Gambia, according THE DAILY NEWS’ findings will be observing the feast on Monday Nov.7."

Am fine and thanks for your consideration Jambo! Busy with politicos and missed your community chum message

"For instance, the council had declared that the country will follow the Mecca calendar to observe Tobaski on Sunday Nov.6, but a greater number of Gambians observed the feast on Monday. While adherence to a different, but equally authentic Islamic teachings is a ground for many Muslims communities’ failure to observe the feast on supreme Islamic council declared dates, there is also no denying that the controversy is beyond the sighting of the moon. It is not just about the moon, but a crisis of credibility and integrity the council is faced with. "Quoted from The Daily News
