"Can you guess the presidential candidate for the convention proponents? Stay tuned for the joke and the insincerity of the year. Let me know if you are up for a private bet on who the presidential candidate for the NRP, PDOIS, and GPDP will be. We live in absolutely hilarious times!"

After above statement in response to to Ansu Koroma on the GPost, I hereby offer a short reflection on why I think Hamat Bah will emerge as the Presidential candidate for Halifa's convention-adherent parties of PDOIS, NRP, GPDP. As NADD and PDOIS represent the same interests, I am not fooled by any unwarranted attempt to treat them as different entities.

After taking a battering, it is obvious Halifa's reputation is in tatters from Gambians who yearn for a united opposition front against the Professor on 24 November. Except for PDOIS's doctrinaire supporters, the pragmatic majority of opposition Gambia are not amused by Halifa's insistence on united flag bearer selection mechanisms calculated to push the UDP off the table. Even on the GPost, there is a noticeable negative shift in support for Halifa.

Consequently, and with a view to restoring his battered reputation, Halifa will not be the presidential candidate for the so-called convention camp. His motivation His motivation can only be underscored by his overwhelming desire to be seen as a high minded person who takes the high road. I do not buy into this ostensible high mindedness, but accept that in the overall calculus of what is at stake for Halifa, Hamat Bah will emerge as flag bearer for the convention camp.

Although Henry represents only Henry, he is a good candidate for Hamat's running mate, but to curtail the ridiculousness of the whole process, I think this honour will go to either Halifa or Sidia. For Henry to be running mate, PDOIS/NADD must first decline the nudge, but again, to curtail the ridiculousness, Henry has no chance. He will have a good consolation prize for a person who represents only himself.

At the end of the day, the whole thing will be purely farcical, and Halifa will be the biggest loser in the long run.

The coining of a “Grand Alliance”
-an expression of reluctance or just another occurrence.

I remember very well when one Cherno Baba was taken to task for his interest in understanding why some of our politicians did not answer to the call at that critical time that shaped the transition period from the ruins of the first republic to the birth of the second. Whiles many, including myself mean, that; had these politicians answered to the call at the dawn of the second republic we would not have trampled this old path, to the same old and tumble-down city. Interestingly, it seems as if the same reluctance is being manifested again in times that demand for total and not fragmented alliances in facilitating a second transition period, 17 years later.

I also remember the argument, that the Gambian constitution did not provide a pre or post-election alliances and that that is why the solution of a merge is the only way out. In that argument there is no mention of a “grand alliance”.

The hard pill to swallow is, our politicians are not short of words but for some reason cannot live up to the eloquence. What politician would constantly say no when duty calls, when the need of unity is cardinal at a time when cohesion is crucial for the country's destiny henceforth.

The only enemy of Gambian politics is uncertainty, but certainly the Cherno Baba owes no one an apology för being at least 17 years ahead.

ALWAYS MY STANDPOINT IN THESE DEBATES AND ARGUMENTS! COALITION/ALLIANCE/UNITED FRONT FEASIBLE ONLY THROUGH "MERGER OF POLITICAL PARTIES" = GRAND COALITION AND A UNITED FRONT CANNOT BE "PARTY-LED"? ALSO "CROSS-CARPET" IS OUT THE QUESTION? THE REGISTRATION OF NADD WAS A CLASSIC CASE IN POINT; TECHNICALLY THE PRECEDENT FOR 2011

WITHOUT NATIONAL DUTY, NATIONAL UNITY, COMPATRIOTS, PARTNERSHIP AND SOLIDARITY NOTHING WORKS FOR THE COMMON CAUSE OF ALL OPPONENTS AGAINST JAMMEH/APRC 2011 AND BEYOND

UDP LEADER MISSED ANOTHER GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD A UNITED FRONT AS LEADING CONTENDER BUT ITS PARTY TOO GREEDY TO UNDERMINE THE UNITY ON COMMON GROUND FOR A UDP PARTY-LED UNDER-PINED BY DOMINANCE FACTOR AND EXERCISING AUTHORITY, POWER AND CONTROL OF THE CAMP ILLEGITIMATELY AND UN-DEMOCRATICALLY OVER-RIDDING OTHER PARTNERS TO RALLY BEHIND RATHER THAN UNITE UNDER "ONE UMBRELLA"? THE CONVENTION WAS ONE OF THE PROPOSALS TO ONLY ADDRESS SELECTION OF FLAG BEARER; THROUGH DEMOCRATIC PROCESS, FOR UNANIMITY, GENERAL CONSENSUS AND POPULAR SUPPORT/ENDORSEMENTS OF THE CREDIBLE CANDIDATE; AND PDOIS/HALIFA IS ON THE PROGRESSIVE FRONT WITH "ONE GAMBIA ONE NATION ONE PEOPLE ONE DESTINY!"
