Police detain journalist Saikou Ceesay By Sainey M.K. Marenah Tuesday, November 01, 2011
Reports reaching this paper have confirmed that Saikou Ceesay, a journalist with the Daily News newspaper and a member of the Gambia Press Union executive committee, was yesterday arrested and is currently detained at Police headquarters in Banjul. Though the police could not be reached for comments, sources said Ceesay’s arrest is in connection with his serving as surety for Nanama Keita, former sports editor of the Daily Observer newspaper, who was facing trial on charges of giving false information, and has reportedly jumped bail, and is now in the United States of America. During the last hearings of the case, Keita and his lawyer, Neneh Cham, were not in court and the presiding magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Ceesay. Ceesay was said to have reported to the police on Monday, after receiving information that the authorities were trying to reach him. Sources said Ceesay reported to the Brusubi police station Monday morning, where he was briefly detained before being rushed to Jeshwang Prison, where he spent some time. Sources also told this paper that Ceesay was later moved from Jeshwang Prison to the police headquarters in Banjul, where he was being held at the time of going to press. Meanwhile, former Observer sports editor Keita was in July this year arraigned at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court charged with giving false information to a public servant.
He was granted a bail of D100, 000, while the Gambia Press Union (GPU) facilitated the acquisition of a lawyer for his defence. Members of the union led by GPU President Bai Emil Touray yesterday visited the police headquarters to secure bail for Ceesay, but were advised to bail him when he appears in court today, a source told this paper.

"Members of the union led by GPU President Bai Emil Touray yesterday visited the police headquarters to secure bail for Ceesay, but were advised to bail him when he appears in court today, a source told this paper."
"when he appears in court today "
The court obviously has an interest because he stood as a surety,so maybe the court are dealing with this, the question arises has he the money to pay for his broken promise to ensure that Nanama Keita appears on the date set by the court as it appears that he "reportedly jumped bail, and is now in the United States of America." If not what happens then? If he is to be taken before the court on a matter concerning his being a surety,I am not sure that bail can be given,I would have thought that the magistrate or judge would have to make a decision as to estreat the surety or not, Like others have said before me on bantaba in cyberspace but have been absent for a long time " I am not an Att. etc", I found this webpage from Tasmania which is probably about the same as The Laws of The Gambia and may give an understanding of the principals involved, http://www.magistratescourt.tas.gov.au/divisions/criminal__and__general/surety There is no indication in the article of any charges being made against him |

Journalist Saikou Ceesay released By Sainey M.K. Marenah Wednesday, November 02, 2011
Saikou Ceesay, a journalist with the Daily News newspaper and member of the Gambia Press Union executive committee, was Tuesday released on police bail, sources have told this paper. Ceesay was arrested on Monday and detained at Police headquarters in Banjul, where he spent Monday night. Ceesay, it was gathered, was granted police bail, after two persons acting as surety handed in their national Identity Cards, and he would be reporting to the police today. Sources also added that Ceesay might likely appear in court today. Sources said Ceesay was arrested in connection with his serving as surety for Nanama Keita, former sports editor of the Daily Observer newspaper, who was facing trial on charges of giving false information, and has reportedly jumped bail, and is now in the United States of America. Keita was in July this year arraigned at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court charged with giving false information to a public servant. Bailed Journalist Describes Cell Conditions as Hell By Saikou Jammeh Wednesday, November 02, 2011
Mr Saikou Ceesay of The Daily News has described the conditions of his detention cell at the headquarters of The Gambia Police Force in Banjul as hell. “Tom (namesake) there is no proper toilet here, we rest in a can. I slept on a bare cement floor. Here is hell,” said journalist Saikou Ceesay. Saikou Ceesay was arrested on Monday by Brusubi police at around 8:00am and transferred to Mile 7 prison in Old Jeshwang in the afternoon. He was finally moved to Banjul police where he spent a night before he was bailed yesterday. The journalist made himself available at the police. His wife was briefly detained few days earlier while journalist Ceesay was attending a two week workshop at Njeliba hotel at Kololi. She was asked to produce her husband. Though he was released on bail yesterday, after spending a night in detention, journalist Saikou Ceesay is yet to be charged for any crime. However, his arrest is allegedly linked to the bail of Nanama Keita, a former Daily Observer deputy editor, who jumped bail and fled to U.S to attend a fellowship. Ceesay is Nanama Keita’s surety. He will be arraigned this morning at the magistrates’ court in Banjul. Bailed at a tune of hundred thousand dalasi, Nanama was facing false information allegations at the magistrates’ court in Banjul when he petitioned The Daily Observer Managing Director to the office of the president, claiming wrongful termination of his engagement and financial mismanagement by the Observer management. He had denied any wrong doing.
