Something curious happened in the middle of the gathering of PDOIS and NRP at the Atlantic Hotel - the rules of the Convention seemed to have been changed to accommodate Lawyer Assan Martin who suddenly and curiously was signatory to the MOU and identified as "Human Rights Defender". Mr. Assan Martin, according to reports, was initially empowered by his Political Party The Gambia Moral Congress (GMC)to take part in the Negotiations held a week earlier at the invitation of Mr. Ousainou Darboe, and to support his Party's position of supporting him as the sole leader of a Party-led coalition. Mid-way through the process, Mr. Martin saw fit to abandon GMC's official position which was in support of Ousainou Darboe's proposal. He did this independendently and without authority from the Party's Authoritizing Organ, thus casting his lot with his co-conspirators effectively betraying his own Party, its membership, leaving his party leader holding the can - an embarrassing position for a party leader to be in - a party leader who is abroad but who, according to reports, has been in constant contact with his Party's delegation throughout the negotiations. Mr. Martin, for whatever reason or reasons, decided to abandon his Party for a Convention concept - a concept so convoluted that few Gambians understand the process. We all know about the Convention idea is that it was concocted by Halifa Sallah in his Agenda 2011 to further advance his personal quest for the acquisition of personal political power. Assan Martin's opposition to the UDP-led Unified Opposition proposed by Ousainou Darboe's party and endorsed by GMC as party position earned him a special invitation to the MOU signing ceremony at the Atlantic Hotel this Saturday and who proceeded to "sign as a person aspiring to be endorsed as an Independent Candidate at the Convention."

Assan Martin's unprofessional behavior obviously driven by personal ambition is totally devoid of the national interest of Gambia and Gambians. For his treachery, Assan Martin was handsomely rewarded by the organizers by changing the rules of the game to accommodate a private individual - a status he enjoyed singly for reasons that is yet to be announced. Reports by Foroyaa.gm indicate that Assan Martin signed the "United Front" MOU as, I presume, "Human Rights Defender." His signature to the MOU is questionable and may have no legal bearing since the MOU was meant exclusively as a document for Political Parties and not individuals or individuals representing civic society. The template used throughout the scheme has been "Agenda 2011" and at no time during the debate was the issue of granting individuals equal status as Political Parties, until Assan Martin decided to abandon his Political Party. If I am wrong, I'd like to be corrected. The Assan Martin debacle, and the manner in which the Atlantic Hotel spectacle was choreographed leaves a bad taste in the mouths of well-meaning Gambians whose trust and respect for the principal drivers of the scheme have been diminished as a result of their Machiavellian shuffle board move that should be evident to many Gambians.

This is nothing but hot air. First, Assan Martin did not attend a single meeting during the UDP initiated talks. The GMC was represented at those meetings by Mr. Muhammed Fatty, who is believed to be Mai’s brother. When the issue of the GMC being represented by presumed brother of the party leader, was brought up on the Jamano show , Mai fatty responded that his relations to the Muhammed fatty was irrelevant, that what was important was that the GMC had a LEGITIMATE representative at the meeting.
Now we can all agree that the GMC was legitimately represented at the talks. On the first day of the talks, Mr. Muhammed fatty reechoed his party’s initial stance to endorse a UDP led alliance, however, towards the end of the meeting Mr. Fatty “ in as much as we support a party-led, let’s go to the people and give them a chance. I support a convention”. When the motion was made by PDOIS for a convention, it was Muhammed fatty of the GMC who seconded the motion and it was the same Muhammed fatty who signed the press release on his own will. So to sit here and conjure up things up for the sake of it is purely ridiculous and outright dishonest.
As for Assan Martin signing the MOU, it was made very clear from the very first meeting that PDOIS would even entertain having an candidate who is not in any party. So Assan Martin signed as an independent person who wants to run, and if selected will do just that.

He cannot become a Ward counsellor much more a president. He is just wasting time and resources. Vote for UDP or APRC and ignore these bunch of clowns.

Assan, Sallah, Seedia, Bah and Gomez are irrelevant in this coming election.

Pa samba, you are right in saying that Assan Martin did not attend a single meeting during the talks. Nothwithstanding this, you are dead wrong in your description of this statement as 'hot air'. Assan was one of the people in the background supporting GMC's delegates at the talks with technical advice and he was in constant touch with the party leader, Mr. Mai Fatty.

At the last minutes when it became clear that the two different positions, i.e. the convention and UDP-led allaince proposals, were irreconcilable, Assan Martin lied to the GMC delegates including Muhammed Fatty by telling them that Mai Fatty had instructed him to advice them to change position -from UDP led alliance to supporting PDOIS's proposed convention- knowing fully that wasn't true and also that no such discussion had taken place between him and Mai Fatty. This is what led to the GMC delegates signing up to the convention proposal as postulated in the joint statement. It was nothing but a treacherous and blatant misrepresentation of both Mai Fatty and the GMC party. Maybe that is what you need to describe as 'hot air'.

This is not 2006. There are people here who know the facts more than you do. So please save us from that Halifa Sallah 'Mr. Know all bull****'. The UDP had been aware of this Assan Martin debacle even before the joint statement was published but only chosen to stay silent out of respect for the GMC and also to allow them to deal with it in their own way.

Thanks
