Cleaning day has been on the last two Saturdays leading up to the Summit, and also last Sunday.Te massage and fruit ladies from Kotu beach were all out on Sunday from 9 - 1 cleaning the roadsides. Last Saturday they had women and children cleaning the airport road. If the Beach ladies don't participate they are suspened from working for a fortnight! If anyone is caught out on a cleaning morning your car keys are taken, there are no exceptions thank goodness (ie tourists).I find the majority of tourists are very good litter wise and use bins on the beach if provided, or take it back to the hotel. Where I live is a huge rubbish problem, we burn ours in an oil drum, but the empty land behind us is used as a general dump for the village, and the wind carries litter everywhere. Occassionally it gets burnt, but is generally left to rot and stink in the sun. After the rains a few days ago the smell was pretty bad. Maybe an idea would be to supply compounds with an oil drum to burn refuse in!!! Anything would be preferable, as the kids all play about in this rubbish, and they have enough to contend with the risk of malaria.Mind you they think I'm quite mad when they see me outside picking up rubbish, it seems enough that the inside of their compounds are spotlessly clean, outside doesn't matter.Any solutions!!

The municipal council has refuse collecting vehicles, but they only seem to collect from the tourist areas, restaurants and hotels etc. They don't benefit the local people in areas off the tourist map!! I'm sure if they placed the large metal bins in strategic areas that they would be well used, and more jobs could be created in the refuse department, but maybe the council don't have the money, the present refuse lorries are a donation from Holland I believe.

IT is WRONG for YAYA to force anyone to take part in the STREET cleaning,As yaya once said he is rich beyoung his dreams{SUPER RICH}then he should invest in refuse trucks and emoply more jobless people to clean our little GAMBIA.

There is no god but Allah

Toubab,

I'm professionally involved to the waste-problem of Banjul. My home town has a city link with Banjul and one of the projects is to install a sustainable waste management system.
To what municipal council are you referring to ?
But this matter is far off-topic I think

Jede I have lots of of other good suggestions if you want to pass them on......would LOVE to run the country one day!
In Kolior, Sidou, the nursery teacher has my picture stuck next to a picture of the president and he says I am his lady president and he only takes his orders from me. LOL!!!!! He is a BIG joker!!!!

I would lOVE to have an audience with the president..but fear you would be visiting me in prison instead of at my dream compound!!!!

Not back in Gambia till March 2007...want to do the Wassu trip then.... Cant go this November ....trying to sell my house and get a full time job....trying to be sensible and settle down!

Jede, I think it is Kanifing Municpal Council, and whatever you are liasing in Banjul, well done!! It always looks clean around the streets and always something to put your rubbish in for collection. Yes, rather of topic.
