We have been in election mode the last three weeks here in Denmark and the results are that we will have our first woman Prime Minister. She is married to Stephen Kinnock, son of former UK Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock.

Red alliance wins election
By Julian Isherwood

Helle Thorning-Schmidt to become Denmark’s first woman prime minister.

The Social Democratic Leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt and her centre-left alliance won Thursday’s general election to give Denmark its first woman prime minister and the first Social Democratic-led government in a decade.

In a cliffhanger election, which on occasion saw the two sides of the political divide neck and neck, the centre-left won 89 seats in the 179-seat Folketing compared to the 86 mandates for the centre-right of Liberal Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Conceding defeat, Løkke Rasmussen said he would be going to the Queen on Friday to tender his government’s resignation, remaining as caretaker prime minster until a new government is formed.

While Thorning-Schmidt is heading for the premier’s office, her Social Democratic Party dropped a mandate to land on 44 mandates in Parliament. Her campaign government platform partner the Socialist People’s Party dropped a full seven mandates to land on 16 seats.

But the reductions for the main two centre-left parties were more than compensated by advances for the two other parties in the group. The Social Liberals of Margrethe Vestager added eight seats to their poll, becoming larger than the Socialist People’s Party with 17 mandates, while the Red Green Party, which also added eight seats to its tally, ended on 12 mandates.

There were also losses and gains for the centre-right, with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s Liberals adding a single vote to land on 47 seats as the largest party in Parliament. The Liberal Alliance could also party, with four extra mandates to land on nine seats.

But the Conservative Party was decimated, dropping 10 seats to land on eight mandates, while the Danish People’s Party saw three of its seats disappear to end up with 22 seats.

“Let’s be honest, this was a bad election for the Conservative Party,” the Conservative Leader Lars Barfoed said, but added that he would be rebuilding the party’s fortunes.

The Christian Democratic Party failed to cross the two per cent electoral barrier and lost its single seat in Parliament.

“I will be handing the keys of the prime minister’s office to Helle Thorning-Schmidt. And Helle, look after them, as they are only on loan,” Løkke Rasmussen quipped.

“We start negotiations on the new government tomorrow,” Helle Thorning-Schmidt said as she basked in the centre-left victory. She will now be negotiating a government platform with her allies, which it seems could include cabinet status for the Social Liberals.

“We have said it time and time again during this election campaign – it is time to put an end to bloc politics,” Vestager said, repeating her campaign theme of cooperation across the political divide.

Congratulations Momodou! It is interesting to see how europe is moving to the right. Among Norway, Sweden and Denmark, only Norway remained a center-left government lately and even in Norway the far right party has grown to be the second most powerful party before the Utoya/Oslo massacre. Now I hope swedish social democrats also win in their next elections.

It might not be an easy ride for Helle Thorning-Schmit because she has to rule with the support of Socialist People’s Party, The Social Liberals and the Read Green Party who are of opposing views on certain issues but Danes are good at reaching a compromise. The negotiations about a government base the coming days will probably show that it's more green than red.

The most important in this poll is that Danes have shown that they want change from the last 10 years influence of the extreme right wing Danish Peoples Party (DF). This time, they have tried in vain to poison the debates with the issue of immigration.

Just so long as the DF are not to be found in the government I am happy :) Was your former PM, now NATO boss, Rasmussen a DF?

Election cycles are unfortunately becoming nightmares for immigrants in Europe even those who have lived there so long with european kids. Many of these extreme right wing politicians always talk of immigration as if it is a criminal act. Strong center parties in europe need to consolidate the more fragile and weaker left wing parties in communicating how positively the vast majority of immigrants in europe are actually contributing in these countries. Their silence on the issue leads to inaccurate and selective observations by the right parties. This is what makes lone wolves and terrorists like Brevik.

No, but his party was kept in power until yesterday by the DF, in order to keep the majority. They had to make concessions to the DF in order to stay in power. They passed all kinds legislation on immigration and discriminating non Western minorities the last 10 years.

Toubab don't you mean again? Don't you remember that the Danes once invaded Britain maybe not that was before your time.

I hope Denmark's first woman Prime Minister leaves a better legacy than the first British one did. Margret Thatcher was Neil Kinnock's staunch opponent. He must be very proud of his daughter in law Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Europe has definitely been a good omen for the Kinnock dynasty.

Peace

We are still waiting for a new government to be formed since the elections last week. Negotiations are still taking place in the red block.

Jobless not part of coalition programme
23. sep. 2011 13.01 English

According to Politiken, the Social Democrats’ leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt wants the labour-market parties to decide the tough issues such as how long the jobless are entitled to receive unemployment benefit.

The Social Democrats want to hand over tough issues, such as how long the jobless should receive unemployment benefit, to the labour-market parties.

In this way, the SocDems will avoid having to discuss every detail with the Social Liberals as part of the negotiations to establish the programme for the new coalition government.

Politiken reports that the unions have given the green light for the coming tripartite negotiations to have the wider brief of labour-market reforms to improve Denmark's competitiveness.

Other issues for consideration are the employment promotion system, working hours, further training and pay, and this makes good sense, according to labour relations researcher Flemming Ibsen.
