Very tragic! May their souls rest in peace. -------------------
Several Lives Perish in a Presidential Convoy Crash By Saikou Jammeh
Friday, September 09, 2011 Several human lives on Wednesday perished after a black-coloured Land Cruiser in a presidential convoy crashed into two vehicles in Busumbala village, Kombo North of West Coast region. Coming from Banjul, the capital, the convoy was escorting Gambian president Yahya Jammeh to his birth village of Kanilai where he is spending his annual leave, which started Tuesday. Eye witnesses say the Land Cruiser veered off the road in an effort to avoid hitting some children standing alongside the highway, but the driver lost control and eventually hit a Benz before swerving further to knock down a 14-passenger commercial van. The white-coloured van and the grey coloured Benz were pausing along the highway alongside other vehicle to allow the presidential convoy to pass. The spokesperson of The Gambia Police refused to give details because, he said, investigations were ongoing. The spokesperson of the country’s main referral hospital, Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH), was unavailable for comments as well as the director, who was said to be busy. Unconfirmed reports from RVTH, however revealed that at least eight people have died and several others injured. The driver of the van that was involved in the accident has also confirmed that three of his passengers, including one Mustapha Jatta and Sarata Sanyang both from the same compound, have died.
